President’s Message

Roy Viken

Many of us are at the age of experiencing foot problems that directly interfere with our fun of dancing. Myself, and several of you, couldn’t even say Plantar Fasciitis a couple of years ago, but now we know far more than we cared to learn.

Many dancers with tender feet are wearing their most comfortable shoes, but not all shoes, especially sneakers, are suited for dancing. Almost every casual shoe you can buy today has some degree of a gripping sole.

Smooth dancing requires some sliding on the dance floor. Especially in round dancing, we must be able to pivot on the sole of our shoes for several moves. If the grip of the sole is too much, knee problems are sure to follow.

The best round dancing (ballroom) shoes have leather soles withrubber heels. When dancing on the balls of our feet, the shoes are allowed to slide and rubber heels act as brakes when needed.

To get the effect of proper dancing shoes, try slipping the ankle portion of a sport stocking over the sole of your shoes and feel the difference. Ditch the super-gripping shoes and enjoy the feel of gliding across the dance floor. Your knees, hips and feet will thank you

Additional note from Lynne: Please send information about your club’s upcoming regular and special events to Lynne Krogh, . Also, the last edition of the national square dance magazine had an article about soles2dance.com. They offer adhesive-backed suede that you can put on any shoes to give them glide. For dancers who want more cushion and support than a standard dance shoe offers, this could be an option.
