Biology / 1

Overview

Biology is devoted to the study of living things and their processes. Throughout the year this course provides and opportunity for students to develop scientific process skills, laboratory techniques, and an understanding of the fundamental principles of iving organisms. Students will explore biological science as a process, cell structure and function, genetics and heredity, evolution and classification, diversity of living organisms and their ecological roles, and an introduction to animal structure and function.

Grading Policy

Grades for this course will be based on the successful completion of each individual unit. Only one grade will be given per unit. Unit progress will be measured only at the end of each unit and will be broken down in the following way:
  • Tests/Labs/Projects 50%
  • Work ethic, classroom participation, group participation, etc. 25%
  • Notebooks: (notes and homework required) 25%
  • Notebooks are a very important part of this class. Materials needed: a three-ring binder and dividers. Your notebook should be a chronological document of all work done in class throughout the year. This is where you will keep notes, returned assessments, and chapter exit interviews.
Following each unit assessment,I will conduct an exit interview with the student. During this interview, students will be expected to present their lab notebook for the unit showing all work completed. It is during this interview that the student and I will together establish whether or not the unit material was successfully mastered or if additional steps need to be taken to prove mastery.

Student Responsibility

I expect that students in this course will become self-advocates. If a student does not understand material that is covered in class, it is their responsibility to make an appointment with me to receive additional help. Students will be provided with opportunities to learn the material in stages and complete assignments before a formal assessmentas well as opportunities to correct this work. Failure to complete any of these tasks will likely result in insufficient mastery of course material.

Honors Biology Opportunity

An Honors Biology opportunity will be presented to students in October. Feel free to contact me at that time with questions.
