NORTH CRAVEN HERITAGE TRUST: There is no New Year recital by the Parish Church Choir in 2011. Officers of the Trust are inviting us in the Easter season instead.

AN EVANGELICAL FAMILY REVEALED is a recent publication by Margaret Ford of the Bickersteth and Monier Williams Letters and Diaries 1880-1918 available from YPD-Books, 64 Hallfield Road, Layerthorpe, York, YO31 7ZG (tel. 01904 431213) for £20.00 plus p&p £2.95. Online orders at See that website for further details. Canon Samuel Bickersteth served as Vicar of Leeds from 1905 to 1917. Many LPC folk will recall the visit here made some years ago by The Right Reverend John Bickersteth, formerly Bishop of Bath and Wells and the interest that attracted.

PARISH TRIP TO IONA 18-22 October 2011: There are three places remaining on the parish trip to Iona later this year. The cost is £200 plus travel; accommodation is in shared rooms in Bishop's House, the episcopal retreat house on the Island. This is a wonderful opportunity to spend a very relaxing few days in one the most beautiful and spiritually refreshing places in Britain. For more information please see the notice board in the City of Leeds Room or have a word with Fr David.

BIBLE READING FELLOWSHIP: Do consider a daily Bible reading for 2011. There are already a dozen members of the parish who avail themselves of the BRF booklet for the year. It’s still only £11.00 for the annual subscription. Details from Ann Nicholl.

SPECIAL GREETINGS: come from Dr Egerton Hingston and family in South Africa.

LUNCHTIME ORGAN MUSIC: in January is entitled The Star proclaims the King is here and reflects music inspired by the great themes and hymns of Epiphany.

CAROLS & CRIBS: Don’t miss Dr Judith Blezzard’s absorbing presentation at the Parish Church on Sunday 23 January at 4.15 for 4.30 pm. Come prepared to participate. This is an entertainment of real quality and considerable interest – please give it your support. Admission Free – Retiring Collection in support of the Bridging the Gap initiative.

FOCUS ON . . .

Many of the stories of our faith are infused as much with the tradition of the church as with scriptural authority. Where the Bible has been reticent in offering us detail, the tradition of the church has frequently been more than generous in seeking to fill in the gaps.

The Feast of the Epiphany, which we celebrated on Thursday, offers us a perfect example of this. The story only appears in the Bible in the Gospel of Matthew (although it also appears in the non-canonical gospel of St James) and we are given precious little detail.

The Epiphany commemorates, of course, the visit of the Magi to Bethlehem. Matthew tells us that they are wise men from the East, that they followed a star in search of the new ‘King of the Jews’ and that they offered Jesus gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh.

It is only tradition however that tells us that the wise men were Kings (see Psalm 68 Verse 29 or Psalm 72 Verse 10), that they were three in number (because there were three gifts), that one each came from Asia, Africa and Europe (a suggestion of Bede’s) and that their names were Melchior, Caspar and Balthazar (the Eastern church calls them Larvandad, Harmisdas and Gushnasaph).

Whether elaborating on biblical stories like this matters depends on whether the tradition of the church sheds light on core biblical truths or unnecessarily distracts us.

Whoever the Magi were, the arrival of these non-Jews at the feet of Jesus symbolises the universal relevance of Jesus’ birth. However much we love the traditions that surround them let us not lose sight of this central truth of The Epiphany. Father David
