Discuss Key Outcomes and Areas to Highlight at the Summit / All
Discussion:
New North (Summit)– Jerry Murphy
  • Summit will be held on December 7 in Green Bay.
  • More of Summit agenda will include opportunities for networking
  • Focus of programming will be on the concept of clusters as part of the economic development strategies
  • Will have video presentation on the three clusters -- upcoming cluster (Marine), out of box (Wind), mature cluster (paper, printing, converting). Will then have a panel discussion regarding those clusters.
  • More and more of the committee work is becoming the annual report rather than the focus of the Summit.
  • Need to get information on what will be happening at the Summit as EARLY AS POSSIBLE.
  • Organizing a New North Summit panel discussion highlighting the work of the Governor’s Early Childhood Advisory Council and the Partnership for Wisconsin’s Economic Success.
Summit:
NEW ERA has a booth set aside for Sustainability, which is all education-centered. Also will have a table for New North to talk about Intern2Work initiative.
Idea: To get a cluster of booths together, with an “Education” umbrella and showcase what each committee is doing (Achievement Gap, WisCareers, etc.)
New North Website: Will be changing the content on the website – each taskforce will be taking responsibility for the website content for their committee work. Educational Attainment Committee will be managing the content on the website.
Reports/Updates / All
Discussion:
Achievement Gaps Taskforce – Damian LaCroix, Chair
  • Passed out and reviewed the Achievement Gap Sub-Committee Vision, Mission, Goals, and progress to date.
  • Reviewed copy of the Life Study project which was completed –participated in the October 5 Brown County Life Study rollout event.
  • Included summary of Wisconsin’s Early Childhood Advisory Council Summary 2010 Report to the Governor.
Post-Secondary Access – Kim Desotell reporting
  • Looking at partnership between business and education and working with a small pool of students in continuing education
  • Creating a bank of employers that can serve as resources/volunteers to work with students (job shadowing)
Rural Access – Lori Suddick
  • Rural access – what is the committee’s role in economic development – are we focusing on rural access or rural regional economic development? Needs to be clarified.
Taskforce II – Nancy Schopf for Jeff Dickert
  • Unsure about next steps on report – completed, but needs to be published, printed, and distributed.
Business & Education Partnership – Nancy Schopf, Chair
  • Committee has not met – talking with WisCaeers (they are going through a lot of changes right now)
  • November 14 at the Chamber will be the first meeting of the committee – new Director of WisCareers will be attending – four other states are using WisCareers for employer profiles and resource and it is very successful
  • WisCareers – asking employers to put their company profile on WisCareers. The other portion to fill out is the volunteer exchange – where they list the resources they can share with high school students – such as job shadowing/tours/presentations.
NEW ERA – Jeff Rafn
  • NEW ERA is putting together an internship website – demand for internships for students is very high – but getting businesses connected with those students is very difficult. Product is meant to make those connections easier.
New North Annual Report Interview: Jeff Rafn
  • Shared information and directed interviewee to Jan Dooley, Superintendent of Wausaukee School District, regarding partnership with NWTC, forwarded pictures of the CNC Mobile Unit for use in the high schools, forwarded the contact information for Linda Bartelt, NEW ERA Executive Director regarding initiatives (degrees) being worked on, Nancy Schopf on WisCareers, and Jerry Murphy at New North.

Direction of Taskforce / Jeff/Damian
Discussion:
  • All members are engaged in activities relative to the work of New North
  • Having trouble keeping membership both on the larger group and the work groups – same people attending at meetings.
  • Need to revisit the work of the Educational Attainment Committee
  • Regional Strategies: Transactional activity is where ownership happens not regional. Hard part from regional perspective is connecting the outcome to all areas – ownership is not as important.
  • Do we need to be as dependent on the committee work as we have been, or should everyone in the region look to the mission of the New North in efforts to increase the economic vitality of the regions?
  • What are the key areas to focus on: Achievement Gap; Rural Access &Success; Post-Secondary Access and Success, Connecting Business, Education and Students, and Core Abilities…? Should we be identifying those and helping others who are doing the work and assist them instead of creating our own projects?
  • Focus should be high end workforce and jobs
  • Would be willing to come back together and look at what has been accomplished, where we need to focus, where committee members can add the most value.
  • Meet in January, after Summit – focus on what will add the most value as the work of the committee

Status/Action: / Person responsible: / Deadline:
  • Meeting to discuss the future of the Educational Attainment Committee.
  • Focus on reaffirming and restating the agenda for the committee for the next year.
