Career Opportunity: Assistant Operations Manager – Fixed Route

Chapel Hill Transit (CHT), the second largest transit system in North Carolina, seeks highly qualified candidates for the position of Assistant Operations Manager – Fixed Route. Functioning as a Town Department, CHT serves the communities of Chapel Hill, Carrboro and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, operating fixed route and demand response services and providing around seven million annual rides. Fare-free, fixed route service is provided on 31 weekday and weekend routes, using a fleet of 99 vehicles.

Primary responsibilities for this position include:

·  Provides leadership in the daily management of the Fixed Route operating division, consistent with the Town’s values of responsibility, equity, safety, professionalism, ethics, communication and teamwork, in coordination with the Operations Manager – Fixed Route.

·  Maintains Fixed Route division’s standards for safety, customer service and reliability by daily monitoring operations Team Members for adherence to policies, guidance, regulations and schedules.

·  Supervises, coaches, trains, motivates, counsels and helps develop Team Members to meet Fixed Route division standards and for career opportunities.

·  Manages scheduling of Supervisors, Operators, open work and equipment on a daily basis, including monitoring employee utilization and overtime. Maintains records of Supervisor and Operator work assignments, including attendance and leave requests. Supervises scheduling, payroll and run bids for Operators and Supervisors.

·  Provides street and base operations supervision as required; furnishes advice, assistance and direction with regard to situations that arise as a result of street transit operations; monitors and evaluates Transit Operator activities and skill levels. Investigates questions/complaints and responds appropriately; provides follow-up written or verbal communication as needed. Operates buses or vehicles and fills supervisory duties as necessary.

·  May assist in service recovery or emergency response requests during major accidents, incidents or natural disasters involving Chapel Hill Transit/Town vehicles, personnel, or property. May also provide information and assistance to community groups and other Town Departments.

·  May represent Chapel Hill Transit at disciplinary hearings and grievances, researches and investigates matters related to counseling and disciplinary matters, prepares documents in support of counseling and disciplinary matters, and tracks the timelines to ensure timely response in accordance with Chapel Hill Transit and Town policies.

·  Assists in the development of Fixed Route Division budget, operating policies and procedures. Confers with Team Members, Operations Manager – Fixed Route and Transit/Town Leadership regarding proper safety procedures, defensive driving techniques, customer service issues/concerns, report preparation for new or revised policies.

·  Reviews reports from Supervisors regarding positive events, accidents, and incidents; Prepares reports and documentation such as personnel record entries, workplace injury, accident/incident, and other operations-related documents;

·  Coordinates hiring and training of Supervisors and Operators in coordination with Transit/Town Leadership.

NOTE: Multiple candidates may be selected for this position. This may require that the duties of the position are shared or distributed based on skills and abilities.

This position requires an Associate’s Degree and three (3) years of progressive experience in a supervisory or management capacity or any combination of education and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities required to do the job; and have the ability to obtain a Class B CDL (with Passenger Endorsement). Communication, interpersonal, customer service and critical thinking skills are critical for this position. This position reports to the Operations Manager-Fixed Route and supervises operations and supervisory staff.

The hiring range is $47,117 – $62,170. Compensation is negotiable based upon experience and qualifications.
