School Counseling Emerging Leader(SCEL)Program

Goal

The goal of the CASC School Counseling Emerging Leader Program is to identify potential leaders within the school counseling profession in California and provide them with CASC leadership opportunities.

  • Graduate Students: Enrolled in a CA approved PPS School Counseling Credential program.
  • Practicing School Counselors: CA School counselors who at time of application have been practicing in the field of school counseling at any public/private Pre-K-12 school, adult school, or community college.

Criteria

  • Maintain an active CASC membership for a minimum of three months prior to submission of application.
  • Has not currently or previously held an elected or appointed position in CASC.
  • Have an interest in developing leadership skills, knowledge, and attitudes.
  • Have a desire to give to the profession.

SCEL Responsibilities

  • Join and participate in CASC committee/task force.
  • Present/co-present at a CASC conference.
  • Assist with or facilitate an Area/Level CASC workshop/training/social.
  • Facilitate a presentation to a school counseling graduate school or district level meeting.
  • Contribute articles to the CASC Counselor Connection.
  • Attend School Counseling Emerging Leadertrainings/phone conferences.
  • Attend the 2018 CASC Leadership Development Institute (LDI) on July 10-12.

CASC Responsibilitiesto SCEL

  • Provide one-year renewal of CASC membership for free. Free membership will be provided beginning when SCEL renewal comes due during time of term.
  • Provide free and reduced-price training opportunities.
  • Provide small group leadership training and mentoring opportunities.
  • Provide fiscal support for program participation as outlined above.
  • Provide Board member mentors.

Application process

An application for interested individuals may be downloaded from the CASC website ( each Spring.Applicants will email an application, statement, resume, and letter of recommendation from his/her administrator/professor byApril 15 . Please scan all four documents and email together in one document.

Selection process

Applications will be evaluated and selected based on the following additional criteria:

  • Leadership potential as indicated by the statement and recommendation letter
  • Enthusiasm for and an ability to carry out the School Counseling Emerging Leaderexperience as indicated by the nominee’s statement and resume
  • Ability and willingness to participate in CASC conference, LDI, events, meetings, and workshops
  • Participants will be notified by May 15
