Drawings are usually rendered to make them look more realistic or lifelike. Designers often produce rendered drawings to show their clients what an idea or object will look like.

Tip: Experiment with how you hold your pencil when shading.

Task 1:

Shade the boxes (render) going from light to dark. The change in shade should be gradual (tonal gradation).

Light / Dark

Keeping the paper in the same position, repeat the task, but this time change the direction of light to dark.

Dark / Light

Is one better than the other, or do you have a preference with the direction you shade?

Careful consideration of how the light falls on an object can also help to describe its shape, form and add realism. The areas nearest the light source will be lighter and those furthest away or in shadow will be darker in tone.
