Lesson Procedures:
A. Introduction/Motivation:

1. I am sure that each of you have dreamed of taking an all expense paid vacation. Where are some of the places that you want to go in the United States if you had an unlimited amount of money to spend? How would you travel there? What are some of the things that you would do? Where would you stay? Where are some of the places that you might eat? These are just some of the questions that we would ask ourselves if we were planning a vacation. In this next project, you will be doing exactly that. You will be planning a 7-day/6-night trip for anywhere in the United States. You will have an unlimited amount of money to spend.

B. Lesson Procedure (at the computer):

1. Using the Instruction Sheet, the Direct Web Site Sheet, and the Internet you are to plan a 7-day/6-night trip to anywhere in the United States. You will need to find the following items:

a. Airline flights leaving from New Orleans to your destination. This includes the Flight numbers for the trip there and the return trip and the price for a round-trip for you and a friend.

b. A rental car and the rental price for seven days.

c. A hotel to stay at and the price for the six nights.

d. Places to go and things to do for the seven days of your vacation, you may need to estimate the cost if you cannot find the exact cost of these things.

e. Restaurants to eat at and the cost for two people.

f. The weather for the next 7 days of your chosen location.

g. A map of where you are going.

2. Using this information you will create the following:

a. A 7 day/6 night Itinerary, including a cover sheet – all done in Microsoft Word.

b. A weather forecast done in Microsoft Excel

c. A cost sheet showing the breakdown of the cost for the trip for 2 people – use Microsoft Excel.

d. A brochure describing the vacation location – use Microsoft Publisher

e. A map of your destination

f. The final page should show all of the web sites that were used in this project.

C. Once the work has been turned in another possible assignment would be to then have the students plan the same trip but this time on a budget. Students could pull budgets out of a hat or they could be assigned. Students could then decide if they could still fly or if they would have to drive. Mileage could be determined. If the student did the Auto Shopping Project earlier, they could go back and see how many miles per gallon the vehicle used. Then with this information and the current price of gas and the miles to the destination a cost could be developed. A new hotel may have to be chosen, attractions and food cost may also have to be changed. The students could then simply go back in the Excel Spreadsheet and change to the new information.

D. Closure.
