LUTHERAN-ROMAN CATHOLIC COMMEMORATION
OF THE 500th ANNIVERSARY OF THE REFORMATION
500 years ago, Martin Luther triggered a seismic upheaval that rocked the western world—with an impact that continues to reverberate to this day.
LOOKING BACK AND CALLED FORWARD
Lutherans and Roman Catholics are collaborating in 2017 in commemoration of the 500th anniversary of the Reformation. Locally, the Archdiocese of Cincinnati and Evangelical Lutheran Church of America (ELCA) Southern Ohio Synod, local Lutheran and Roman Catholic Parishes and All Saints Lutheran Church and St. Veronica Church in Mt. Carmel are recognizing this anniversary as an opportunity to advance our ecumenical efforts toward unity in Christ.
The foundation of this is found in what are termed the five ecumenical imperatives. In summary, they are:
1. That we begin from the perspective of unity and not from the point of view of division.
2. That we continuously be transformed by the encounter with the other and by the mutual witness of faith.
3. That we should commit ourselves to seek visible unity…in concrete steps.
4. That we should jointly rediscover the power of the gospel of Jesus Christ for our time.
5. That we should witness together to the mercy of God in proclamation and service to the world.
To this end, All Saints Lutheran Church and St. Veronica Catholic Church are going to collaborate in three events this September, October and November. Pastor Jim Dinkle and Father Del Staigers invite you to participate in these upcoming events.
1. Parishioners of both churches are encouraged to watch a new documentary film entitled, Martin Luther: The Idea that Changed the World
This will be broadcast on September 12 at 8 p.m. on CET 48, PBS 16 & KET 54 and on September 13 at 8 p.m. on PBS 16.
Then, on Wednesday, September 20 at 7 p.m. St. Veronica will host in the Parish Ministry Center a discussion and reaction to the film with members of both churches in attendance. Refreshments will be provided.
ABOUT THE FILM
This entertaining new film follows the great adventure story of Luther’s life, packed with political intrigue, kidnappings, secret hideouts, and life-or-death showdowns. At the same time, it's a story about the most important questions of life, including "Who am I?" "What is my purpose" and "How do I get right with God?"
2. On October 15 at 2 p.m. All Saints Church will host a “Hymn Fest” with choirs from both churches. The 45-minute program will include each choir alone and combined, selections for each church’s bell choir, and common hymns for us to sing together. Refreshments will be provided. This will also help kick off our week of the Parish Retreat that week. All are invited.
3. Parishioners from both churches will join together to collaborate on an Outreach project developed by St. Veronica Outreach Commission. More details to come but will happen in November in preparation for the holidays.
We hope you take time to be a part of these events.
