PositionStatement / The Development Manager develops and executes the Development Unit strategy to increase financial support from PAFs, Major and Middle donors. This role is also responsible for raising funds through bequests.
Specifically this role seeks to establish closer relationships with high net worth individuals to grow the number and value of major/middle gifts and bequests.
Accountabilities and Responsibilities
Strategic Management /
  • In collaboration with the Deputy National Director, establish annual income targets and implement strategies to achieve them in regard to Major Donors, Middle donors, PAFs and bequests.
  • Identify and cultivate Major Donor (MD)and PAF prospects and ensure that they are stewarded, nurtured and serviced to optimise long term value.
  • Develop the bequest strategy and execute as required.
  • Write tailored proposals and other documents to solicit funds from Major Donors and PAFs.
  • Work with National Director, Deputy National Director and UNHCR global team to identify key projects and reporting for Major Donor support.
  • Manage the Donor DevelopmentCoordinator to ensure they support development activity and other FR activity as required.
  • Work strategically with all stakeholders: Board, National Director, Deputy National Director and UNHCR to identify new Major Donor prospects.

Unit Management /
  • Provide analysis and reports on a monthly, quarterly and midyear basis, plus ad hoc, as required.
  • Manage and achieve budget line items relevant to role (Major Donor, PAF, Middle Donor and Bequest).
  • Commitment to A4U’s Emergency Strategy.
  • Attend Australia for UNHCR events and other functions as appropriate to represent the organisation, meet and greet stakeholders and nurture potential supporters.
  • Maintain thorough and up to date files and records relating to Major Donors, PAFs and Middle Donors.

People Management /
  • Manage, coach and develop the Donor DevelopmentCoordinator to improve skills and meet performance expectations.
  • Ensure annual performance reviews are completed on time - by end of February each year.
  • Conductregular one-on-one meetings with the Donor Development Coordinator.

Selection Criteria
Essential Qualities /
  • Minimum of five years in a major donor role.
  • Extensive strategic and operational fundraising experience.
  • Senior level relationship management expertise, with an ability to influence and actively engage a wide range of donors and build long term relationships with stakeholders.
  • Excellent written and communication skills, including proven grant/proposal writing experience.
  • High level management skills and experience including project management and effective time management skills.
  • Good analytical and problem solving skills.
  • Advanced computer skills, including all Microsoft office products.
