Students' Rights and Responsibilities

Students have the right to:

  • A healthy, safe environment, free of negative influences.
  • A meaningful education with suitable and challenging courses, adequate facilities and learning materials.
  • Extra help from teachers at mutually convenient times.
  • Receive consequences in a firm and fair way with due respect for personal dignity.
  • Participate in available extracurricular activities.
  • Be fairly evaluated, taking specialcircumstances and exceptionalities into consideration.
  • Have projects, assignments, homework and tests evaluated and the outcome of the evaluation made known as quickly as possible.

Student Responsibilities

Pride in our Surroundings:

We all have the right to work in attractive and well-kept facilities. Students have the responsibility to respect and maintain the cleanliness of the school environment.

Work Habits:

Because each student has the right to achieve his or her potential, students have the responsibility to develop and maintain good work habits.

Safety:

We all have the right to feel safe and have personal space and property respected. Each student has the responsibility to contribute to a supportive and secure environment free from harm.

Respecting Individuals:

Every person has the right to be treated with dignity and respect. Students are responsible for showing respect to all members of our school community.

Good Conduct:

Students have the right to feel proud of our school. Students representing SedleySchool are responsible for displaying good conduct in and out of the school.

Courtesy:

The students have a right to be treated in a courteous manner, and the responsibility to treat others, with courtesy.

Discipline Policy

The intent of the school wide discipline policy, as is classroom discipline, is to make every attempt to get students to be responsible for themselves and their actions.

The guiding principles & considerations of the Sedley School Discipline policy will be:

-The seriousness, frequency and intent of unacceptable conduct as well as age and maturity of students is considered in determining appropriate actions

-Disciplinary action, whenever possible, is based on preventable and restorative actions, rather than merely punitive.

-Students, when possible, are encouraged to participate in the development of meaningful consequences for not following the established Code of Conduct.

Problem solving will form the basis of some or all of the following steps: (see below)

  • Each teacher attempts to deal with the discipline problem in his/her classroom using problem solving steps.
  • A record is kept of all behavior that has the potential to involve the safety of that child and/or others.

7 steps to follow in the problem solving process:

  1. What are the facts? (What happened? Who did what?)
  2. For what part of the problem is each person responsible? (What part do you own?)
  3. What are the consequences of each person’s actions? (What was the result of what I said or did?)
  4. What are some possible solutions?
  5. What is the best solution?
  6. Is the problem solved?
  7. How can this problem be avoided in the future, through positive behavior reinforcement?

There may be behaviors within the school setting that are considered inappropriate by staff. These will be identified and dealt with on a case by case basis in a fair, respectful and caring manner.

(i.e.) walk please, carry the ball please don’t bounce it.

When Staff address discipline issues, a system will be employed that will consist of three major stages.

Stage 1

  • The in class teacher will deal with the student regarding in-class discipline problems.
  • Many approaches may be tried. Consequences for inappropriate behavior as identified by staff may be.
  • inform students of inappropriate behaviors
  • loss of recess
  • action plan
  • removal from class to the hallway where additional work will be provided
  • communicate with parents
  • in-school suspension (extended loss of recesses)
  • If the student refuses to cooperate, he/she will be sent to the office.
  • Only students committing severe or repeated offences are to be sent to the office.

Stage 2

  • The student will meet with the principal and be asked to plan so he/she may remain in class and will have the future consequences of repeated office visits explained.
  • In-school suspensions of increasing lengths are used if a student chooses to repeat severe or repetitive unacceptable behavior.
  • Parents must be involved at this stage.

Stage 3

  • A student who continues to exhibit unacceptable behaviour will receive an out-of-school suspension.
  • If unacceptable behavior continues the student will face out-of school suspensions, of increasing length. If severe problems persist expulsion may result.

In-school Suspension (ISS)

Students who are placed in the in school suspension room (ISS) will be supervised. The following are the ISS rules:

  1. No talking to anyone, unless permission is granted by a staff member.
  2. No leaving the desk or the room unless permission has been granted by a staff member.
  3. All students must be working on assigned class work or provided material, or reading a library book. If they are not doing this they will be given work to do. This is to keep them occupied so they can catch up on any missed work or do extra studying. Students are to be occupied not idling their time away or sleeping.
  4. Students may be required to do some planning on how they may return to the classroom and be more successful than they presently are.
  5. Failure by a student to follow the rules of the in-school suspension room will result in possible further in-school suspension time or suspension from school.

Out of School Suspensions

Out of school suspensions are given following the guidelines of the Education Act and the PrairieValleySchool Division. We believe in a safe environment - physically and emotionally for both students and staff. We believe in students being accountable for their actions. It is hoped that when students receive an out-of school suspension, the reason for the suspension is reinforced at home. It is important that the significant adults in the lives of children and youth have similar expectations for them.

Students can expect to receive an out of school suspension for, (but not limited to) the following kinds of behaviours:

  • Theft and/or vandalism of school property or property under the care and control of the school.
  • Theft from local facilities used in the community.
  • Direct opposition to authority including perceived and/or verbal threats or attempts to intimidate staff members.
  • Perceived threats to other students either within our own student body or towards other students in the division.
  • Physical violence to other students.
  • Use of technology that is abusive or slanderous to students/staff.
  • Being under the influence of or in possession of alcohol/drugs or related paraphernalia

Professional Supplies and Work Areas

Staff members require professional supplies and work areas within the school in order to do their jobs effectively. Students are not to use a staff member’s desk or supplies (markers, paper, pens, etc.) without the staff member’s direct permission. They are also asked to not enter a professional workspace (staff room, Principal’s office, etc.) without being invited.

Student Dress Code

As a general guideline, clothing should be school appropriate. Skirts, pants, dresses and longer shorts are all school appropriate. Cropped shirts/tops (with exposed midriff), short skirts or shorts and visible undergarments will not be tolerated (i.e. baby tees, spaghetti straps, mini-skirts, halter-tops.) As well, students are not to wear any clothing that displays obscene or inappropriate messages.
Clothing advocating alcohol or drugs is not permitted. SedleySchool has implemented a “no headwear” policy. Caps, hatsand hoodies may not be worn in the school at any time, other than specially designated days. Should a student come to school dressed inappropriately, they will be asked to change to gym clothes or borrow a ‘cover-up’. Failing this, the student will be removed from class until parents can be contacted to bring suitable attire.

Technology Policy

SedleySchool recognizes the importance of cell phones for communication between parents and students. We understand that for many families, this is how messages are passed on. However, there is potential for cell phones to be a problem at the school. In particular, cell phones can cause disruptions to learning, jeopardize academic integrity, provide temptation for theft, issues with video/camera usage, techno-bullying, and it also has the potential to interfere in emergency situations. IPods and other electronic devices can also become a great distraction in classes; they serve as an obstacle to building community; and they can contain material that may be offensive to students and staff at our school.

Any message that needs to be passed from parent to student, or vice-versa, can be done through the office. Students have lockers which, if used properly, will keep their cell phone and/or electronic device safe while they are in class. However, the school does not accept responsibility for items that are lost or stolen.

Taking all of this into consideration, SedleySchool is implementing the following policy:

Cell phones are not to be seen or used at any time inside the school building during the school day. The school day begins when students arrive at the school and finishes when they leave the school building. Use on the bus is at your own risk.

Depending on the circumstances, a student may first be warned about getting rid of their phone or device. Staff will confiscate any cell phone that they see in the building and bring it to the office. These phones will only be released to the parent.

IPod and other MP3 players are not to be used during the school day in Grades K-6. Grade 7 & 8 students may use IPod and MP3 players (not cell phones), at the teacher’s discretion during specified times. If students do not comply with the classroom rules, privileges will be revoked.

Attendance Policy

Attendance is a vital aspect of student’s education. What a student learns while under direct instruction from their teacher and through their interactions with other students is irreplaceable. Students who miss a large amount of time from school, place their academic success in jeopardy. It is the students’ responsibility to catch up on any missed assignments on/during their own time.

Student attendance will be reviewed frequently and communicated to their home to seek improvement in the student’s attendance which will lead to increased academic success.

All students must be accounted for by a parent phone call, note, or appropriate documentation (e.g., medical or dental certificate).

An unexplained absence by a parent will result in a phone call home from the school. An absence with no parental notification prior to the absence or without a note accompanying the student upon his immediate return to school will be regarded as an “unexcused absence.”

Reporting absences
Your cooperation in telephoning in any student absences and reasons for absence, or sending a note with a sibling is requested. Emails addressed to or will also be acceptable. Parents are asked to phone 885-2122 or email as soon as possible on or before the day of the absence to make staff aware of the student’s whereabouts.

Tardiness

Students who arrive late to school on a consistent basis place their learning at risk and interfere with the learning of others. It is the students’ and parents’ responsibility to ensure that the student arrives to school and to each class on time. Any habitual tardiness will be treated as a disciplinary infraction. Parents will be contacted in the cases of habitual tardiness.

Tobacco and Tobacco Products

SedleySchool and the surrounding property are smoke free areas. No smoking or use of tobacco products will be tolerated on school property or at school-related activities. Students who use tobacco on school grounds will be referred to the Principal for disciplinary action.
