This is a list of supplemental materials for social studies that I am suggesting for purchase. These materials will benefit me while teaching second grade social studies.

Video Tapes

1. Old Glory $69.95

This video recounts the history of our flag from 1776 to the present. This video will teach students what the flag symbolizes, what its parts mean, and how to respect it. It also explains the meaning of the Pledge of Allegiance and discusses how the Star Spangled Banner was written.

2.. Families of the World Series $285.00

Each video in this series takes students through a typical day in the lives of two families with small children. They can compare and contrast different cultures with their own and learn about meal preparation, eating, jobs, activities in school, transportation, religious customs, evening routines, and getting ready for bed. The countries included in the series are Brazil, China, Ghana, India, Japan, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Sweden, Thailand, and the United States.

3.  The Wright Brothers at Kitty Hawk $14.95

In this video, the Peanuts gang helps Wilbur and Orville Wright get their plane off the ground. Charlie Brown crashes his kite, but the Wrights teach him that many failures are the groundwork for success.

4.  Ancient Civilizations for Young Students $225.00

Hannah explores ancient civilizations with some animated friends. Live action scenes are interspersed with graphics, colorful maps, drawings, photos, and views of artifacts.

Enrichment Books

1. Growing Up in Viking Times $4.95

This book uses watercolor pictures and text to describe what it might to have lived in Viking times. This book depicts food, games, education, festivals, and ceremonies.

2.  A Young Patriot $6.95

This book tells the story of a boy who joined the Continental army at the age of 15 and fought in the Revolutionary war. This vivid account of his experiences includes black and white prints to illustrate it.

Games and Simulations

1.  Social Studies Games $24.95

This book includes 28 card games on social studies topics. These games are reproducible and cover a wide range of social studies topics.

2.  Kid Town $50.00

Students play the roles of workers and consumers in Kid Town, while the teacher is the mayor. This simulation teaches the concept of what a community is. The simulation includes detailed directions, reproducible masters, money, games, maps, forms, teaching tips, and extension activities.

1. Internet Activities for Social Studies $14.95

This book is designed to help teachers integrate the Internet with traditional curriculum topics and tasks. Each lesson is centered around a web site.

2. Geography Wall Charts $48.10

These wall charts are modeled on satellite photos. They show six continents and the United States in razor-sharp relief. They are laminated and include geography worksheets.

These activities include exercises that trace pathways that aided in the expansion of the United States.

This poster shows the Liberty Bell, a symbol of our nation’s freedom. The Liberty Bell is superimposed over the Declaration of Independence and a portion of the American flag.

This globe asks over 10,000 geography questions out loud. Contestants can search the globe for the correct answer.
