Date: / 31 January 2008
To: / Secretaries of Divisions and Local Associations in England -FOR INFORMATION and ACTION

Dear Colleague

GENERAL TEACHING COUNCIL (ENGLAND) ELECTIONS 2008

The purpose of this circular is to provide information to divisions and local associations on the elections for the General Teaching Council in England and on supporting local NUT GTC(E) candidates in the forthcoming election

The circular also provides advice and information to divisions and associations of the support available from the Union for promoting candidates.

Sponsored Candidates

The Union is sponsoring a list of Union members as candidates for the GTC (England). Applications for Union sponsorship were sought in the July edition of “The Teacher”. The NUT Executive agreed to sponsor all NUT members who put forward their names for election to the GTC. The lists of NUT sponsored candidates are set out on the attached sheet as an Appendix.

Support for the NUT Sponsored Candidates

Voting for GTC elections is on the basis of the single transferable vote for all categories. There will also be an article in the February edition of “The Teacher” profiling each of the NUT sponsored candidates.

Local Promotion

There are strong advantages in divisions and associations promoting at local level NUT sponsored candidates.

Divisions and Associations

Divisions and associations are advised to give the highest priority to promoting the candidates in their area. The NUT regional offices will co-ordinate and advise on the promotion of the NUT’s sponsored candidates. It is essential to elect as many NUT sponsored candidates as possible.

Yours sincerely
