Director of Enology & Viticulture

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES

The Director of Enology & Viticulture provides leadership for the Institute for Enology & Viticulture and the wine industry. The Director is responsible for the management and implementation of a strategic plan to ensure the world-class status of the wine education program and College Cellars, the teaching winery. Areas of responsibility include supervision of staff, marketing and communications, and community and industry relations. The Director will also serve as the General Manager of College Cellars. The Director is expected to work collaboratively with faculty, staff, and key industry leaders to achieve the goals and objectives that further the mission of the program. The Director reports to the Vice President of Workforce Education.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Administration

  • Supervise program personnel.
  • Develop and manage an annual plan and budget for the Enology and Viticulture program and College Cellars.
  • Interface with administration on management issues.
  • Participate in industry and governmental affairs with college president as they relate to programs and fundraising.
  • Oversee compliance in conjunction with the Washington State Liquor Control Board and the Department of the Treasury Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau regulations.
  • Manage the business, marketing, and quality of College Cellars of Walla Walla -- a teaching winery.
  • Instruct and/or manage specified course work and industry seminars.
  • Facilitate Advisory Committee leadership.
  • Host tour groups and dignitaries as required.
  • Monitor program performance; recommend and implementimprovements.
  • Coordinate activities with the Culinary Arts program.

Industry Relations

  • Participate in local, state, and regional industry-related organizations to foster relationships and build support to include, but not be limited to:
  • Washington Wine Commission
  • Walla WallaValley Wine Alliance
  • WashingtonAssociation of Wine Grape Growers
  • Washington Wine Institute
  • Vinea Winegrowers Sustainable Trust
  • Attend industry meetings, seminars, and functions to advance programs.
  • Foster international relationships to increase program visibility and develop partnership opportunities.
  • Manage and foster industry relationships for placement of workforce-ready students.
  • Manage and facilitate wine and food consumer education with industry partners.

Strategic Planning and Marketing

  • Develop a long-term strategic plan for the Enology and Viticulture program and College Cellars.
  • Develop and implement strategies and tactics to implement the strategic plan.
  • Coordinate a comprehensive marketing and public relations strategy that effectively positions the programs.
  • Conduct media relations on behalf of the program with responsibility for the full range of communications activities, including interviews and news releases. Secure local, state, and national media attention.
  • Related duties and responsibilities as may be assigned

QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Work Experience

  • Bachelor's Degree in related field; Master's degree preferred. Industry experience may substitute for education.

  • Experience in the wine industry with a knowledge base in wine marketing, wine farming, and wine making.
  • Three years related senior administrative work experience preferred.
  • Higher education instructional experience preferred.

Knowledge and Skills

  • Exceptional interpersonal and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the college, the community, the industry, and media contacts.
  • Effective leadership and management skills; strong organizational and communication abilities.

TERMS/CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

This is a full-time, 250-day professional position exempt from the provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act. In accordance with the provisions of the Federal Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986, Walla WallaCommunity College hires only United States citizens and aliens authorized to work in the United States. Persons hired must be able to provide acceptable documentation of lawful authorization to work in the United States within three (3) days of employment and official transcripts.

SALARY

Annual compensation is $60,000 to $72,000. The Washington Community College System has an excellent benefit program.
