Describe the political and economic changes and continuities in one of the following regions during the 20th century – 1900 to the Present:

Asia – Read pp. 1006-14 – Indian, China, Japan – Identify major players, political organizations, events in this reading and then go to Chapter 39 pp. 1097-1106 and look at the events during the struggle for independence, your questions on this section should also help. Now go to pp. 1113-16 and read about more current situations in this region AFTER decolonization and take notes.

Africa – pp.1014-1020 – Look at Africa under Colonial Domination and the impact of the Great War, Great Depression in these pages and identify key people and trends such as African Nationalism, Jomo Kenyatta, Marcus Garvey, Pan-Africanism and connect these changes to those on pp. 1107-1113 after WWII. Key figures in this time are Frantz Fanon, War in Algeria, Nasser in Egypt, Negritude, Ghana – Kwame Kkrumah ruled by Britain – Kikuyu one of Kenya’s largest ethnic groups, Mau Mau subversives or Communists. Kenya –tribal reserves, Greenbelt Movement

After Independence – pp. 1123-1127

Latin America – pp. 1020-27 Protests, Communists, Key Figures, Diego Rivera, Dollar Diplomacy, Good Neighbor Policy with U.S. you had economic dependency. Look at Nicaragua, Mexico and then go to Chapter 39 and connect in to pp. 1119-1123, Mexico – Cardenas, Argentina – the Perons. Chile – Pinochet.

III. Topic Sentence outlining Economic change/continuity

-Three pieces of bulleted evidence supporting it

-One of which should be an analysis for a change or a continuity you mentioned – highlight your analysis in pink.

IV. Global Context – remember it must link back to the question and either be political or economic and you may take a few sentences to describe it. (No more than three) Highlight your Global Context in orange.

Outline for Comparative Essay for Chapters 36 & 39

I.Thesis Statement that includes that address similarities and differences in the DECOLONIZATION process in the two regions you are addressing – NAME those areas. Remember for the sake of organization your Thesis statement should lay out the organization of your entire essay. What is it you are going to compare between the decolonization processes in each region?

II. Topic sentence that explains Decolonization process by using a Direct Comparison between the two regions. Remember a Direct Comparison tells how they are similar in one aspect yet different in that same aspect – Be Specific!! This Direct Comparison should be highlighted in yellow.

III. The Direct Comparison should be immediately followed by an ANALYSISexplaining why or how they are different or similar. The analysis should be highlighted in pink.

IV. Three Differences between the two regions’ decolonization process. These should be highlighted in Green.

V. Three Similarities between the two regions’ decolonization process. These should be highlighted in orange.
