Scholarships available through the Department of Family and Consumer Studies
The Department of Family and Consumer Studies (FCS) Scholarships are made possible through the generous contributions of College and Department Advisory Board Members, friends, and alumni.
Only students who qualify for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) can be considered for scholarships that say “demonstrate financial need” in their description below. The FCS department will work with the Financial Aid office to check a student’s FAFSA status. If you do not qualify for FAFSA please apply for scholarships that do not require a demonstration of financial need.
Please read the following descriptions and select the scholarship(s) you feel you are qualified for and wish to apply. Scholarship availability may vary.
¨ Department Tuition Waiver
Student must be a Utah resident seeking their first Bachelor’s degree. Student must have a minimum GPA of 3.5.
¨ Sterling Sill Scholarship
This scholarship was endowed by the family of Sterling Sill. This scholarship is given to the Junior (60-90 credit hours) with the highest GPA that applies for a scholarship.
¨ The Trudi Thomas Scholarship
A scholarship fund established in 2008 by Mike and Valerie Thomas in the name of Trudi Marie Thomas for junior or senior students demonstrating financial need with a preference given to graduates of a Davis County, Utah high school studying in Family and Consumer Studies or Middle Eastern Studies. If there are no qualified Davis County candidates then the scholarship may be awarded to a resident of the state of Utah.
¨ Esther Peterson Scholarship
Utah native Esther Peterson served three United States Presidents, and was a dominant force in the consumer movement. This scholarship is in her honor and memory and aids students who have demonstrated a commitment to social justice.
¨ Barbara Christensen Scholarship
The Christensen Scholarship was established in the memory of Barbara Christensen, who graduated with honors from our department with a Bachelor of Science degree in Home Economics with a secondary education credential in June 1954. It was made possible by her sister and family. This scholarship is to inspire and help FCS students who demonstrate financial need reach their professional goals and aspirations.
¨ Hulda Van Steeter Garrett Memorial Family Strengths Scholarship
Established by Dr. Barbara Vance, a U Home Economics graduate, to recognize and honor Hulda Van Steeter Garrett. Recipients of the scholarship will be undergraduate students in Family and Consumer Studies who show most promise in pursuing a career focusing on developing family strengths, including students studying human development, family interaction, consumer economics, family life education and marriage and family therapy. With preference given to non-traditional students.
Students who wish to be considered for this scholarship must ALSO include an essay, up to one page long, describing how the student sees his/her professional work following graduation contributing to two or more of the following family strengths:
-The strong family is a cohesive family (That is, healthfully bonded emotionally).
-The strong family is adaptable (That is, the family has rules that are made by the entire family when needed and enforced by the parents).
-The strong family had an invulnerable sense of commitment (That is, family members are devoted to one another and are dedicated to the promotion of each other’s welfare and happiness, and to the unity of the family)
-The strong family expresses appreciation for on another frequently and in a variety of ways.
-The strong family has effective communication patterns.
-The strong family spends a lot of time together.
-Spiritual wellness is typical in a strong family.
-The strong family has the ability to cope effectively with crises and stress
¨ Elva Acklam Stark and Arvil L. Stark Scholarship
Elva Acklam Stark was a librarian at the University of Utah Marriott Library from 1962-74.This scholarship that she and her son, Douglas, so generously donated was also in memory of her late husband, Arvil L. Stark. The Scholarship will be awarded to a junior or senior students majoring in Human Development and Family Studies, or Consumer and Community Studies. Recipients must have integrity, initiative, and demonstrate financial need. Recipients may receive a scholarship or an honorarium associated with an internship. If the award is for an internship the student must be enrolled as an intern with a community organization through the Department of Family and Consumer Studies.
¨ Eda Parkinson Anderson Scholarship
This scholarship honors Eda Parkinson Anderson, who was a student at the University of Utah in 1928, majoring in Home Economics. It is a gift from her husband, A.J. Anderson and was established to help students learn to be wise consumers and to build strong enduring families.
¨ Virginia Cutler Fellowship
The Virginia Cutler Scholarship was originally a scholarship named for and endowed by the Cutler Family. Upon the death of Dr. Virginia Cutler, a former FCS department chair from 1946-52, the scholarship name was changed to honor Dr. Cutler.
¨ Colleen Cluff Caputo Honor Scholarship
The Colleen Cluff Caputo Honor Scholarship was created to honor Dr. Colleen Cluff Caputo, a retired faculty member from the Family and Consumer Studies Department. Dr. Caputo made significant contributions to the development of the current interdisciplinary program in the Department. Recipients shall be deserving students who show academic promise and are interested in pursuing a career as a teacher or work in the area of school and family relations.
¨ Sara Baum Welke (Ida Mae Hanks) Scholarship
Sara Baum Welke was an aunt of Ida Mae Hanks, who was an Idaho native. In her will, Ms. Hanks endowed this scholarship in her Aunt's memory to help other Idahoans or other nonresidents of Utah receive an education from the University of Utah. Scholarship will be awarded to a Sophomore (30-60 credits), Junior (60-90 credits), or Senior (90+ credits) with a preference for non-residents with first preference for students from Idaho. Recipients shall be students with a 3.3 GPA, a record of good school citizenship, and no prior history of the use or sale of illegal drugs.
¨ Faye D. Taylor Memorial Scholarship Fund
A scholarship fund established in 1977 by gifts in honor of Faye Taylor to create the Faye Drushal Taylor Memorial Scholarship Fund to be used for scholarships in the Department of Family and Consumer Studies.

- If you are a double major within the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences, you will only be eligible to receive a scholarship from one department.
- Only submit requested materials. Any additional materials will be discarded.
- Scholarship materials should NOT be sent to the College Dean’s office. All requested materials MUST be sent directly to the Family and Consumer Studies Department. Any materials (applications, personal statements, transcripts, or letters of recommendation) sent to the Dean’s office will NOT be forwarded, resulting in an incomplete application that will not be considered by the scholarship committee.
