My name is Anna Fletcher and I am am in second year studying Law and Communication (Social and Political Science). I am proud to nominate myself for the positions of Equity Director and Brennan Program Director for 2016-17.

I have been an enthusiastic member of the LSS during my two years of study, participating in a range of competitions and activities including: being a senior buddy in the Henry Davis York Buddy Project, winner of the 2016 Junior Criminal Law Moot, participant in Brennan Discussion Groups, competitor and judge in the 2015-16Negotiation Competitions.I’ve been very fortunate to have had so many opportunities afforded to me at UTS andhave experienced firsthand how involvement in LSS initiatives can enrich your university experience and help you to grow beyond the scope of your degree. It would be an honour to give back to the society that has given me so much and to help others to have as rewarding anexperience as I have had.

I ampassionate about social justice and strongly believe that every student has a right to access quality education, regardless of their background or circumstances. If elected, I would work to promote initiatives suchas the textbook equity scheme to help provide assistance to those most in need. I would also do my utmost to be a reliable and welcoming point of contact for students, and to ensure that all students felt their voices were heard. We have a beautiful and diverse community of students and I would love to make the LSS as inclusive as possible of different backgrounds and experiences. I would endeavour to expand the social justice portfolio to develop the initiatives in place and focus on issues that resonate most with our students.

As law students we are immensely privileged to receive such an amazing education, and have so much potential to use our knowledge and skills to contribute to others who are less fortunate.The Brennan program in particular provides invaluable opportunities for students to engage with social justice issues and discover where their legal skills and knowledge can intersect with real world issues. If elected I would strive to maintain the high standard to which this program has been run by previous directors, and expand the marketing of the program to raise awareness of the many ways to be involved. My main aim would be to make the program and other social justice initiatives as accessible as possible, not only to first year students but to older students who may need additional encouragement to continue their commitment to extracurricular activities.
