Dear Parents

Here is an overview of the subjects that will be covered in class 4 this half term.

Our topic is : Homes and Habitats

Literacy : The Circle of Life

This half term we begin by looking at the story of The Lion King. We will analyse characters and create our own, along with looking at play scripts with a view to write our own play scripts and use our acting skills to perform them.

The children will also learn about animation and they will describe the different types and how it is used within films and programmes.

Numeracy

The children will explore place value working all the way up to the millions. They will use this knowledge when working with decimal numbers and when problem solving. The children will also build on their written addition and subtraction knowledge. We will also be learning about 2D-shape and telling the time.

Topic: Homes and Habitats

This half term we will be building on our knowledge of climates and animal’s environments. Additionally, we will also be learning about the rainforest and the animals that live there. We will also be looking in Geography at reading maps, specifically Europe.

Science: States of Matter

The children will learn about solids, liquids and gasses, their properties and how they can change shape. We will also be learning how to present this data in a bar chart.

P.E. : Gymnastics and Games

This half term our focus will be to create sequences though the use of jumping, rolling and landing.

We will also be working on our throwing and catching skills using different types of balls in preparation for bigger team games.

Music: Rock- Don’t Stop Believing

Class 4 will learn the key components in rock music and the musical terminology associated with it. They will be recognising the pulse and rhythm within different rock style songs and the different types of instruments used.

A musical instrument through wider opportunities will continue to be learned by some children.

R.E. : Buddhism

The children will continue to explore the beliefs, customs and traditions of this religion and comparing them with their own.

I.C.T.

The children will build on their computing skills focusing on e-safety and handling data. They will also be using lots of technology for digital research within other lessons.

French

We will begin by learning about the different French adjectives and how to use them in a sentence, along with French translations. We will then move on to learning about the parts of the body.

PHSE

We will be looking at identifying choices, solutions and influences. We will also be thinking about using our listening skills and becoming more empathetic, compassionate and assertive. We will also be focussing on different forms of body language, both verbal and non-verbal.

Throughout school, we have a positive behaviour policy, which all members of staff use consistently. In class 4, the children can also receive raffle tickets to go in a prize box to reward when good behaviour, good work or when manners are displayed. Children will be given rewards regularly both in school or to bring home. To continue to support this policy at home, it is beneficial for parents to ask children about any rewards they have been given throughout the day as this again reinforces their good behaviour, rather than asking children how many times they have had their name on the board. This will help to maintain positive behaviour and if we do feel, there are any problems you need to be aware of we will contact parents directly

Homework will be given to children on a Friday and will support the work completed in class. This will be a spelling task, a Literacy activity and Numeracy work linked to our classroom learning. Children will be asked to complete homework for Thursday of the following week, in their homework books unless told differently. Children should read to an adult every night where possible. If you listen to your child read, please can you record this in their reading records and read the comments made by the adults in the classroom.

Yours sincerely

Miss Luker
