August 2015

Dear Home School Family:

I am writing to make you aware of a recent change to school board policypertaining to home school students. This new policy will allow home schoolstudents to take up to twocredit bearing courses per academic year at the school that serves their attendance zone. Credit bearing classes are those that result in a high school credit being earned.

In order to take advantage of this opportunity parents need to follow the steps highlighted below. Please note that the registration process must be completed on or before August 28, 2015.

#1 The student must be registered in the appropriate Spotsylvania County school.

Steps:

  • First, find the correct school. Please go to the Spotsylvania County Public Schools homepage, select departments from the menu, and then click on transportation followed by bus stop information on the left hand side of the page. Enter your address and the corresponding school will be listed.
  • Next, pre-register your student. Please go to the Spotsylvania County Schools homepage and click on the student pre-registration link (left hand side of the page under site shortcuts), and complete the form.
  • While on the pre-registration page click on the Registration Checklist. This form will help you to identify the registration documents that you will need to bring to the school.
  • Call the appropriate school to complete the registration process.

#2. Complete the Partial Enrollment Form (LBD-R). This form can be located on the Spotsylvania County Schools home page. While on the home page select the parent tab, then select homeschooling. Please bring this form with you to the school.

#3. Visit the school and complete the registration process.

After reviewing this information, please contact me should you have any additional questions. I have enjoyed working with you this year and I hope that you enjoy the rest of the summer!

Sincerely,

Linda Binion

Guidelines for Partial Enrollment

The Spotsylvania County Public School Board Policy permits parents to enroll their child(ren) in the public school system for attendance at a school on a part-time basis to enhance their educational experiences. Students who are residents of Spotsylvania County and who are either (i) enrolled in a nonpublic school or (ii) receiving home instruction pursuant to Virginia Code §22.1-254.1 may enroll in the Spotsylvania School that serves their attendance zone in order to take a course(s) on less than a full-time basis according to the following criteria:

Courses are subject to availability and class size limits.

 A student may take up to two full-year credit bearing courses in any school year.

 Spotsylvania County Public Schools reserves the right to administer a placement test to determine appropriate course placement.

 Middle school students have the opportunity to earn a high school foreign language credit. However, this one high school credit is taken over two years (7th and 8th grade foreign language equals one high school credit). Although a partially enrolled student may take the 7th grade class, placement in the 8th grade portion cannot be guaranteed.

 Students must attend the school that serves the attendance zone for their residence. Special permission for student transfers will not be accepted.

 Transportation will not be provided.

 Any student wishing to enroll in a course pursuant to this policy must indicate their desire to do so no later than March 15th (August 28th for the 15-16 school year) of the preceding school year.

 A student who relocates to Spotsylvania County after March 15th shall have until August 15th to register for any such course.

 Parents wishing to enroll their child on a part-time status must complete the Partial Enrollment Form (LBD-R) and submit it to the principal at the appropriate school.

 Students may be on school grounds no more than 10 minutes before or after any scheduled class time without specific permission from the principal. Students are expected to sign in and out of the building.

 Part-time students enrolled under the provisions of this policy are not eligible to participate in Virginia High School League sports or in any school based student organizations/activities. The only exception is for students who are enrolled in chorus/band where concert participation is a graded activity.

Students shall take state Standards of Learning (SOL’s) assessments if given in the school credit-bearing class in which they are enrolled (i.e., end-of-course tests).

 Students and parents will be required to sign and meet all requirements of the School Board’s Code of Student Conduct as well as rules set forth in the applicable school’s handbook.
