Short Faculty Bio: Associate professor at ArgosyUniversity – Chicago;

  • During the last three years, Dr. Malkawi was one of the prime architects of the High Productivity/Performance Computing Systems at Sun Microsystems. This is a project sponsored by the Department of Defense Advanced Research Program Agency. His involvement was in the fault tolerance aspect of the system.
  • Dr. Malkawi co-founded and is acting VP of a startup company (AIM Wireless Solutions). This company develops and provides high performance and highly reliable software systems. This group has developed several packages for the telecomm industry. The products provide ultra high speed performance.
  • Dr. Malkawi is a visiting Research Scientist at the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign (UIUC).
  • Dr. Malkawi holds the position of “International Program Coordinator” for Jordan University of Science and Technology (JUST). He recently arranged for JUST to establish a joint collaborative program in Engineering Sciences with University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign.

Course description:

This course explores data management and its enabling technologiesas key components for improving mission effectiveness through thedevelopment of open, enterprise-wide, and state-of-the-art dataarchitecture. In addition, the course considers key data managementstrategies, their enabling information technologies including data bases,data warehousing, electronic archiving, data mining, the web “database”search engines, and other knowledge discovery methodologies. Thegoal of the course is to enable students to identify and implement datamanagement strategies and data-related technologies that enhancethe objectives, strategies and resources of their organizations.

Course Objectives: This course will examine the new challenges in the world of database systems in light of exponential growth of data, data access, and continuous change in data types and formats. The challenges include:Database maintenance; performance of database query and reporting; rliability and availability of database systems. The students will be learn how to architect the database systems bottom-up to address each and every one of these challenges.Upon entering this course, the student is expected to have a basic understanding of Information Systems (IS) fundamentals. Specifically, the student should have completed a graduate-level course in Management Information Systems or should possess an equivalent level of knowledge.

1 / IT Strategy / Ch2; Luftman / Topic Analysis - Choose a topic in database management (e.g. design, development, implementation, management) for your topic analysis. Email to your instructor a statement of the topic area you intend to use for your topic analysis. Prepare a summary that identifies the major research threads in your topic. A reference list should be included in the summary. The topic should be relevant to the future of database and/or data mining management.
The professor will approve the topic of the project during the time when the class meets. E-mail the professor by week 2 with the topic for your final project. Email the professor a draft reference list by week 5. The Final Project will be a research report relevant to the selected topic. Your report will include an evolution of the chosen topic, the problems resolved or will be resolved, and future trends. The paper should have 3-5 references for each of these areas. The paper should be 12 to 15 pages in length and must be presented in the APA style, and is due during the last week of classes.

Information Literacy: ArgosyUniversity’s Information Literacy Tutorial was developed to teach students fundamental and transferable research skills. The tutorial consists of five modules where students learn to select sources appropriate for academic-level research, search periodical indexes and search engines, and evaluate and cite information. In the tutorial, students study concepts and practice them through interactions. At the conclusion of each module, they can test their comprehension and receive immediate feedback. Scholarly writing: The faculty at ArgosyUniversity is dedicated to providing a learning environment that supports scholarly and ethical writing, free from academic dishonesty and plagiarism. This includes the proper and appropriate referencing of all sources. You may be asked to submit your course assignments through “Turnitin,” ( an online resource established to help educators develop writing/research skills and detect potential cases of academic dishonesty. Turnitin compares submitted papers to billions of pages of content and provides a comparison report to your instructor. This comparison detects papers that share common information and duplicative language.
