Course: Graphic design/ computer graphics

Course Introduction: Art 1

Throughout the course of this year, graphics students will involve themselves in a variety of different computer projects and computer based projects. This class is designed to combine the traditional concepts of advertising and printmaking arts with technology and modern concepts in advertising, design, and computer generated arts

/ Course Text or Student Materials:
All necessary materials will be provided for the students.
Units of Study:
Etching, etching with aquatint, monoprints, engraving, introduction to photoshop, use of CS6 photoshop as a means to create graphic designs in advertising and media arts, CS6 sales flyer, CS6 movie poster design, CS6 cd/album cover, CS6 surrealism / Student Objectives:
Students are expected to respect each other and work to their ability at all times. Students should have an open mind and strive to improve their ability level with each project assigned. Students should leave this course with a clear understanding of photoshop and computer graphics. / Standards/Anchors:
9.1 production and exhibition of visual arts
9.2 historical and cultural contexts
9.3 critical response as related to visual arts
9.4 aesthetic response as related to aesthetic interpretation and environmental influenses
Instructional Plan:
Students will be introduced to a variety a mediums, resources, projects, and cultural influences. Students will be expected to perform to their ability level at all times. Computers will be used as an aid in all assigned hand on projects and will be the sole medium for at least 75 percent of assigned course work
Student Assistance: students may have extra time to work and will have an art instructor available during period nine resource
Assessments and Evaluation:
Students are to be evaluated using criteria based assessment. Criteria will be evaluated subjectively, but a grading rubric will be used. When a project is nearing completion, the class will move on, but students that are still working will be able to work during resource or may come to the art room during a study hall. All work must me turned in by the completion of the given quarter. / Grading:
Students will be asked to follow criteria for each project. All projects assigned will have 4 criteria assigned. For example, if a student is to create a still life using pencil, the expectation would be that the students will be graded on proportion, mark making techniques, use of value, and contrast. Using a rubric, students are awarded points based on how closely their project follows assigned criteria. / Homework/Procedures:
At times, students will be asked to use home computers to find a visual aid if a home computer is available. Students will be expected to use their home time to develop a mental plan or creative solution as to ensure that all class time is used to create and work.

In order for you and the other students in the classroom to work in an atmosphere that is conducive to learning, which encourages intellectual growth and creativity, the following classroom guidelines have been established.

Student responsibilities

Obviously, you are expected to conduct yourself in a manner that will allow all members of the class to reach their maximum potential. Excessive talking and moving will not be permitted in the classroom. Many students need a quiet atmosphere in order to concentrate. Therefore you are to limit your visiting during the class period.

Class preparation

You are expected to come to class with all materials that are not provided by the school, at the very least, this means a number 2 pencil.

Absences, Tardiness, and make up work

School policy will be followed

Assignments

You will have an opportunity to use a great variety of mediums in this course. All course work must be turned in one week before the end of each term. This will give students the opportunity to work if the time allotted for a given project expires before they have finished. However, at the time of project change it will be the students responsibility to find time to complete unfinished assignments during study halls, lunch, or before school.

Enrichment

Students are to seek out photoshop tutorials and complete step by step plans with any additional time

Extra Time

Although the class will move on as we begin to complete assignments, students will have until the end of the quarter to turn work in. Students are permitted to work before school, during study halls, or through part of their lunch period.

Grades

Grades are determined by creativity, craftsmanship, and how well students follow criteria for a given project. If students give full effort for all assignments, students should expect a minimum of a B grade in the course.
