“Issues in Teaching aboutAfrica and the Arab World: History, Politics, Human Rights, and Media Perceptions“
Based on the historical and complex relationship that exists between the US, Africa and the Arab world, and to engage teachers indiscussion and dialogue on topics that relate to these two areas in order to further their knowledge and increase their capacity to teach them in the classroom. At the end of the workshop, each candidate will receive $250 stipend, resources for the classroom, a certificate of completion and will be accredited in line with the Pennsylvania Act 48 Credit system.This workshop has the following objectives:
-Provide a survey of past and present histories of Africa and the Arab world.
-Explore the relationship between the two regions and the US in terms of foreign policies, human rights, democracy, and media perceptions.
-Introduce pedagogical methods on teaching about Africaand the Arab world in the classroom.

This session will review African histories; discuss the impact of colonialism; explore the current political situation in the region using specific countries as case studies; and examinethe role of regional groupings.

This session will examine the different stereotypes about Africa and Africans in the media, and discuss ways for providing more balanced portrayals and media coverage of Africans and Africa.
