  1. Why is it important for a culture to have surroundings that are considered Natural?

Go to Google Earth on the computer, and find 3 places that you are interested in, and that you think would have great “Natural Surroundings.” Then, look around and see if there are cues in the environment or culture that speak to Globalization. Discuss these things in relation to how they might be affecting the surrounding culture, and if they add to or detract from the Natural Surroundings. You may type the entire exam separate of this form and email it to me if printing is a problem for you.

  1. On Google Earth, go to Kenosha, Wisconsin, and look at Street Level. Look at the surroundings, especially the park areas. Now go to Central Park in New York City. You can go to Street Level on any of the surrounding streets to see the park view from the City. Compare these two park settings, and how they either work (or don’t work) to convey a sense of Nature in the built environment.
  1. How has Globalization changed the ways in which societies respond to natural disasters? Relate instances such as the recent earthquakes in Haiti and Chile, volcanic activity in Iceland, and the miners just released from the mine in Chile. Does it matter if the country is primary vs. periphery?
  1. Download the links on the website. Follow the links in Google Earth to the20 Parks I’vemarked for you throughout the world. Compare and contrast the level of development in at least 3 parks. Feel free to go to linked websites and learn more about the place, and discuss the things you have found. Then, view three places on these links that strike you as especially beautiful, well thought out for the environment, and critical for protection. Discuss the reasons you find these places special, and why they need continued protection.

  1. What are a threeways in which Cultures are responding to Global Climate Change, and what the types of opportunities afforded are in these responses?
  1. What are some of the Green Collar Jobs of the future? How is imagination fueling the Green economy?
  1. Photocopy a map of Downtown San Diego from Thomas Bros., and then go to the phone book or Internet and look up one type of industry that would be considered a stress on the local environment, such as dry cleaners, waste recycling, auto-body repair, gas stations. After making the map, discuss what you patterns you find.
  1. When is Nature inefficient to or for a Culture? Is this a relevant argument to our energy policy?
  1. Discuss the natural history of San Diego. What are some of the plants and animals that are endemic to this region? What ecosystems are relict populations from the last Ice Age?
  1. Is College a successful recycler? Where do the wastes from City College go after they leave campus (recycle, waste, wastewater treatment, etc?) How much time is left for San Diego’s dumps?
  2. What were some of the environmental impacts associated with Early Human Settlements?
  1. Discuss the difference between mining for resources and using renewable resources. How is recycling impacting mining? How is recycling impacting energy use?
  1. What are the impacts of land-use change on the environment?
  1. Discuss the interdependence of economic,environmental and social/cultural issues that makes some experts fear an ecological time bomb in peripheral regions.
