CREATING Your Student Groups

CREATING Your Student Groups

CREATING your student groups:

[All student information listed isfictitiousand for demonstration purposes only.]

Static Student Groups

Static groups contain a specific list of students. The members of these groups do not change unless you manually add or remove them. Therefore, you could track the same students, as members of the static group, from year to year.

Smart Student Groups

Smart Groups are in process and change according to the values of the filters you use to define the group. The members of smart groups are pulled every night so the group always contains only students who currently match the criteria for the smart group.

Create a New Static Group in two ways:

  1. From the My Student Groups tab.

To create a group by searching for students by name, click the "New Group..." button. Give your group a name and either click "Save"or "Save & Edit..."to save your new group.

If you chose to "Save and Edit..." you'll be taken to the student search form, where you can search for students by name, and click them to manually add them to your group. When you are finished adding students, choose "Back to Groups"to return to your list of groups.

Note:If a student that you selected does not show up in the group, then you do not have permissions to view that student's data. Please seeRoles & Permissionsfor more information.

  1. From the Preview Panel Student Queue

Using the "Filter & Create" tab you can easily find students who match any number of criteria and then create static groups of students, as you go.

First, add at least one Filter Group and choose any criteria to filter by.

In this example you can choose a range of last names to filter by.

Make sure that the Preview Panel is open so that you can preview the students who match the criteria you choose.

From the Preview Panel, you are able to collect individual students into a temporaryStudent Queue.

The queue remains persistent as you search, so you can collect a few students, add or remove filters, add a few more kids to the queue, and so on. When you are ready, save your queue as a Static Student Group containing just those hand-picked students.

*This list does not update nightly and only ever contains those students you added to it manually.

Create a New Smart Student Group

Choose theFilter & Createtab to start defining the filter criteria for your Smart Student Group.

If it is your first time viewing this interface, you'll be presented with a few helpful tips to get you started. You can permanently hide these at any time.

Begin by adding a Filter Group.

Filter Groups

Each Filter Group can be turned on or off. If turned off, then the filters are not applied. To remove a filter group, or turn it off, click the remove button.

Navigate between filter groups by scrolling left-to-right, or by clicking the group names in the header area.

Note:For a student to be listed, you must have permissions to know the attribute about the student. Please seeRoles & Permissionsfor more information.

The list of students returned by your filters is called aSmart Group Preview.Savethose filters to create a smart group. As student attributes change, then the list of students in your smart group will also change. For example, if you used the Enrollments Filter Group to make a smart group of third grade students, then next school year, the students in that smart group would change as their enrollments attributes changed.
