COURSE TITLE: Physical Education Turner Middle School

MISSION STATEMENT: Themissionof the Turner Middle SchoolPhysical EducationProgram is to educate the mind, develop the body, and provide opportunities to buildskill levels in a variety of activities, which will enhance students’ well-being.

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

The Physical Education program provides each student with the opportunity to participate in a comprehensive program consisting of skill development, lead up games, team sport, and physical fitness activities. The students receive instruction in rules, skills, and strategies associated with different sports as well as learning experiences involving physical conditioning activities. The students will also have the opportunities to become involved in lifelong physical activities through individual sport units. Some of the units during the semester may include but are not limited to: football, softball, team handball, team speedball, ultimate Frisbee, volleyball, soccer, and basketball. Cardio-vascular activities will be part of the class grade. The program promotes the spirit of cooperation, leadership, fair play, and friendly competition.

GENERAL POLICIES AND PROCEDURES

The Turner Middle School Physical Education Department strives to make classes a positive learning experience for all students. To do this successfully, we have established some basic classroom procedures and guidelines to let all parents and students understand our goals, objectives, and grading policies for the year.

Objectives:

•To promote good health through exercise.

•To develop and maintain positive social skills and good citizenship.

•To exhibit good sportsmanship, a sense of fair play, and respect for others.

•To provide knowledge and activities that are designed to enhance the components of

Fitness and promote a healthy lifestyle.

Class Expectation:

1.Students should be on time. You must be inside the locker room when the tardy bell rings.

2.Be Respectful towards teacher(s) and peers.

3.No gum, candy, food or drinks allowed in locker room or gym.

4.No foul or vulgar language will be tolerated.

5.Abuse of the physical education equipment or facilities will not be tolerated.

6.Remain in your assigned area at all times

7.All electronic devices are to remain in the locker room.

Behavior:

All Students are expected to follow all classroom, school, district rules and policies. Violating will incur appropriately deemed disciplinary measures.

Discipline Cycle

Citation 1: Documented verbal warning

Citation 2: Student-teacher conference with parent contact

Citation 3: After school detention with parent contact

Citation 4: Team ISS (1x) with parent contact

Citation 5: Parent Conference

Citation 6: Office Referral: Consequences to be decided by an administrator

Activities:

The following activities will be used to develop understanding of movement concepts, principles, strategies, and tactics as they apply to the learning and performance of physical activities.

Grading:

40% Content Knowledge:Unit tests, Worksheets, Quizzes, Projects, Journal Writing

20% Dress Out:Dressing out daily in school colors

20% Participation:Vigorously participating in all aspects of class

15% Fitness Gram:Fitness assessment

5% SLO:Mile Run

Physical Education Clothing:

In Physical Education we require that students change from their school clothes into workout clothes. The Turner PE Department recommend students to dress out into PE uniforms or school colors athletic apparel. The uniform can be purchased with the gym teachers. Lockers:

Gym lockers are available in each locker room for students to share and for storage of each student’s personal property during class time. Please bring a lock from home and lock items up each day. Lockers are free and locks will not be supplied.

Doctor’s Note:

If your child has a medical condition, which would necessitate adapting their physical education program, please return a physician’s statement specifying any restrictions. Parental excuses notes can be written for a maximum of three days. A doctor’s note is required for longer durations.

Accidents:

In Physical Education any student injured during P.E. should notify their instructor immediately before leaving class. Failure to do so may possibly impact medical insurance claims.Please be advised that school insurance can be purchased at the beginning of the school year. We as Physical Education teachers encourage our parents to purchase the school insurance. The teacher, school, nor the district is responsible for paying for emergency room nor doctor visits. If a student is injured during physical activity an incident report will be completed and parents will be contacted.
