Course Description: MATH 0099 provides instruction in intermediate algebra. Topics include properties of numbers, linear equations and inequalities, quadratic equations, polynomials, rational expressions and roots.

Prerequisites:Satisfactory placement scores/MATH 0097

Course Objectives:

To demonstrate algebraic skills in solving equations.

To demonstrate the ability to apply mathematical thought and methods.



To graph an abstract function

To model concrete problems and arrive at solutions.

To use appropriate technology to enhance mathematical thinking and understanding.

To demonstrate algebraic skills in solving inequalities.

Requirements for Passing Math 0099:

Perfect class attendance (attend all classes) and good class participation

Make-up of all missed classes, excused, or unexcused

Successful completion of all class work and homework assignments

A well-organized notebook due at designated times during the semester

COMPASS:In order to complete Learning Support requirements for mathematics, students must earn a grade of C or better in MATH 0099 and pass the COMPASS exit exam with a score of 40 or higher.

Homework:

Assignments will be given in class. You are expected to STUDY, work problems, read the assigned material, and do homework.

Grading Policy:

Make-up Tests and Quizzes Policy:

There will be no make-up tests without any reasonable excuses. There will be approximately 5 quizzes given throughout the semester,. Quizzes will not necessarily be announced ahead of time.

Grading Scale:

Tutorials:The Math Lab, located in the TutorialCenter in the Library, offers one on one tutoring as well as software and videos to accompany your textbook. Please take advantage of the excellent services offered by the TutorialCenter if you are having any difficulties or you feel you are getting behind!!

IMPORTANT NOTES:

• A failing grade will be assigned if the student is found cheating. As a GeorgiaHighlandsCollege student and as a student in this class

• If a student withdraws from class before mid-term date, the instructor will assign a grade of "W". If withdrawal occurs after mid term, a grade of "WF" will be assigned no matter what the student's class average. The student must initiate the withdrawal from class. The instructor will not withdraw any student for "abandonment" of class. The student who abandons the class will receive a grade of "F" at the end of the semester

• Whenever you are having difficulty in a math course it is always advisable to see your instructor during his office hours, or make an individual appointment with him

Special Note to Students Receiving Financial Aid:

This message applies only to students receiving financial aid: Federal regulations state that if a student did not attend classes and received failing grades, then the grades were not earned and financial aid needs to be reduced accordingly. Please be advised that any student receiving a 0.00 GPA will be required to prove that the 0.00 GPA was earned by attending classes or completing requirements for each class. Students who have earned at least one passing grade for the semester will not be affected by this regulation. If a student has properly withdrawn from all classes, the student’s financial aid should be adjusted from the time they signed the withdrawal form.

Classroom Policies:

ATTENDANCE AND TIMELINESS

Plan to Attend all Classes: Students are expected to attend all classes. Since lectures begin promptly at the scheduled time, students are encouraged to avoid arriving late to class. Roll will be taken during each class session.

Be on Time for Class: It is very important to be on time for every single class you attend.

Notifying the Instructor of Absences: If you are unable to attend a class period, you do not necessarily need to call to explain your absence (unless it will cause you to miss multiple class periods or the final exam period). However, you are responsible for getting the information and assignments you missed.

CLASSROOM ETIQUETTE:

Act Like an Adult! You are expected to respect other students’ rights to learn at all times.

Class Materials: Please remove all items that you will need for class from your book bag or other carrying devices prior to the start of class. In addition, make sure pencils are sharpened before class begins.

Talking: You are welcome to visit with friends before and after the lecture, but not during the lecture. Conversations (not related to class work during class) create a disruptive learning environment.

Cellular Telephones: Turn cellular telephones and pagers off or switch them to the vibrate mode. Do not answer cellular telephones during class. Phones will be confiscated if this becomes a problem

Portable Listening Devices are not permitted in the classroom.

Food and Beverages: Please enjoy your food and beverages outside of the classroom before class begins and place. Eating and drinking in class is disruptive (except water) to those students around you. Be considerate.

Guests: Please do not bring children or guests to class. This may interfere with the learning process. If there are any unusual circumstances, please speak with the instructor in advance.

End of Class:Do not gather your belongings toward the end of class. Wait until class has been officially dismissed. Other students are trying to pay attention to the last part of the lecture.

TESTING POLICIES:

Tests and Quizzes:Some classroom tests and quizzes may consist of a combination of short-answer and multiple-choice questions. Students must show work on all short-answer questions to receive credit. Partial credit may be given for short-answer questions.

Final Exam Test: You may only take the test during your section’s scheduled final exam time that is comprehensive and required for everybody.

Be on Time:In order to ensure sufficient time is available to finish the test, be on time. Tests must be turned in at the end of the scheduled class period. Therefore, if you are late, you will not only be counted tardy, you will have less time to work on the test. Additional time will not be given for tests. No student will be allowed to take a test unsupervised.

Bring You Own Writing Instrument:Students should bring pencils or other writing instruments to class with them. Asking another student for a pencil or writing instrument is distracting to that student and other students in the class. If necessary, this should be done before the start of the test. Pencils should be sharpened before the start of the test. Scratch paper will be supplied.

Calculator Policy: Use of calculators is allowed on all tests. The TI-83+ (Texas Instruments 83 plus model) calculator is what is used in most College Algebra and Mathematical Modeling classes. Please note that sharing calculators during graded assignments is not permitted.

Remove all Unauthorized Items From the Top of the Desk:I will supply the test and scratch paper. Students may use authorized calculators. All other items should be placed under the desk. Loose paper should be secured in book bags or placed inside of textbooks.

Do not Talk During the Test:Students found talking during the test will not be allowed to finish the test.

Keep Your Eyes on Your Own Paper:Students found looking around the room or at tests being taken by other students will not be allowed to finish the test.

Academic Integrity: If you cheat on an exam, you will be given a grade of “F” for the course and you will not be allowed to come to class for the rest of the semester.

If you Finish Early,quietly turn in your test and scratch paper. Leave the classroom quietly. Pack book bags outside of the classroom. Do not ask to look at your test paper after you have turned it in. Do not re-enter the classroom once you have left. Test grades will not be available until your next class period.
