Course Description:

This course is designed to introduce students to the process of creating a yearbook. Students will study Graphic Elements & Type Treatments and Principles of Photo Composition. Students will apply the Elements and Principles to design and create the ECMS Yearbook. Students will use the computer to create layouts for different pages of the yearbook.

Course Materials:

All course materials will be provided for you. There is a class set of books for this course; however, they stay in the classroom. There will also be occasional readings from worksheets, articles, and handouts will be used to further student understanding. Students must be able to work on the yearbook at home on the internet. They will be given a login and password to access the yearbook program online.

Course Objectives:

-Students will learn vocabulary by studying the Elements and Principles of Art.

-Students will learn Graphic Elements.

-Students will learn Type Treatments.

-Students will keep a Design Book.

-Students will learn how to participate in art critiques and be able to discuss their

opinions on or about a certain piece of work.

-Students will learn proper safety while working in the lab.

-Students will TRY EVERYTHING!

-Students will complete assigned yearbook page by the appropriate deadline and/or by Dec. 20, 2013.

Expected Behavior/Outcomes:

-Come to class on time with all necessary materials and be prepared to work the full class period.

-Use your design book to create and store your ideas.

-Actively participate in both lab time and during class critiques.

-Be responsible for tools, supplies & lab space. Clean up all materials at least 5 minutes before the end of class. Raise your hand to be called upon to speak in front of the class, ask a question, or to get out of your seat when the teacher is talking.

Grading:

Grades are averaged with completed assigned yearbook pages and yearbook staff responsibilities. Yearbook Staff responsibilities are as follows: taking photographs, completing yearbook spreads, and recording sales of yearbooks. Students will also distribute the purchased yearbooks to the school at the end of the year.

-Yearbook pages will count for 50% of grade.

- Staff responsibilities/Design Books/In-class work will count for 50% of grade.

-Students will be given a rubric for each assignment.

-There will be 2 unit tests during the semester.

-Design Books will be graded every Friday during class.

-There will be a Design Book Assignment everyday in class.

Grading Scale-taken from Student Handbook:

A = 90-100 C = 70-79

B = 80-89 F = 0-69

Other Important Information:

Consequences: In the occasion that a student is misbehaving a student will first be given a warning (a verbal warning to remind the student of the appropriate procedure). If the misbehavior continues then a conference will be held (hold student after class to discuss behavior). The last step before an office referral will be a phone call home to parents.

Attendance: Attendance will be taken during each class period. Success in this class is directly related to the student’s attendance and participation in the course. Attendance problems will have a negative effect on the student’s nine-week and semester, grade.

Plagiarism: Definition; the act of taking someone's words or ideas as if they were your own. Don’t do it! If a student submits a piece of work that is not his or her own, the student will be asked to complete the assignment again.

Passes: No student has permission to leave the classroom unless the teacher has issued a WRITTEN hall pass.

Seating Chart: All students are expected to come to class on time and to sit in his or her assigned seat. Failure to do so may result in the student receiving a tardy or an unexcused absence for the class.
