Job Summary
Position is part of the Office of Professional and Career Development (OPCD), which serves more than 4500 undergraduate students in the Harbert College of Business at Auburn University. The position reports to the director of the Office of Professional and Career Development. The career counselor coaches and teaches students concerning academic majors, career choices, employment opportunities, experiential education, and graduate school decisions. The Career Counselor participates in employer development/relations and strategic planning for the office.Superior interpersonal skills with excellent oral and written communication skills including excellent public speaking skills are requited. The candidate should be organized, flexible, and able to handle several tasks simultaneously.

  • Career Coaching/Counseling: Provide career counseling/coaching to students, alumni, and other guests as requested, including, but not limited to, resume and cover letter writing, job search strategies, interviewing skills, academic major discussion, and graduate school applications individually, in groups, and in classes.
  • Professional Skills Teaching: Participate in development of and teach sections of BUSI 1010 and 2010 classes that support school transition and career development; support faculty and students' needs of the majors' 3000-level professional development courses.
  • Career Development Programming: Plan, develop, and execute career development programming, including career fairs, job shadow days, workshops, career panels, class presentations, and academic programming; assist with marketing efforts.
  • Career/Professional Development Resource Development: Research and develop educational resources, such as career handouts, exercises, software programs, website content, etc.
  • Strategic Planning: Participate in setting strategic objectives and tactics for the office in support of the College's strategic goals; document and provide usage statistics and learning outcomes/assessment data for team planning and decision making.
  • Student Support Services: Collaborate with Integrated Student Service groups (advisors, program champions, faculty and staff) on developing holistic success plans for students and student programming needs.
  • Employer Development: Participate in employer development and relationship building in coordination with employer relations manager and director.
  • Experiential Learning: May coordinate internships and other experiential learning.
  • Supervision: May train and manage graduate assistants, as well as students as teaching assistants (peer educators) and peer advisors.

Minimum Qualifications
Entry into the applicant pool requires a Master's degree in Business, Education, Counseling, or relevant field; plus 2 years experience in providing career counseling and planning services. Employer will consider advanced degree in lieu of experience.

The candidate will have experience with career assessment tools and interpretation, and more than one year of university-based career services experience; may include internship, graduate assistantship, or other experiential learning. Additionally, the candidate will need demonstrated ability to build relationships with different contingencies from faculty, to students, alumni, and employers, as well as demonstrated ability to utilize technology.
