Costume Tracking and Design

Instructions & Rubric

Costumes are anything worn by an actor on stage, including accessories and jewelry. Your objective is to track the costumes that are being used by the actors in your show, as well as to ensure that the costumes being worn complement the production.

In the audience’s eye, costumes help to establish the credibility of a show. Therefore, it is important that the costumes you use are faithful to the setting and time period of the production. Colors used in costuming tend to create a strong emotional impact on audience members, so keep the emotional content of the show in mind as you pick costume colors. It is also important to consider the director’s concept and style of the play.

Your responsibilities with costumes can be broken down into three basic areas. The first is a costumes tracking sheet. This tells you what costumes are needed for each character. (Remember that some actors play multiple characters on stage.) Blank and sample tracking plots will be provided. The tracking sheet you submit must be neat and easy to read, so that it can be easily understood by cast members, crew members, and the director. It must be entirely accurate. It will help to ensure that your cast members know what costumes they are responsible for bringing in and when they must be worn on stage.

Secondly, you will be responsible for drawing three colored, costume sketches for some of your most interesting characters. You should check to be sure that these costumes are, as closely as possible, true to the style of the show.

Finally, when the production is over, you will make sure that any costumes not picked up by cast members are returned or put away.

Remember, parents, faculty, and friends will see our production, so make this your best work. Other cast members will be depending upon you. You help to make our show a success!
