Purpose of county steering committee:

To gather information on the intrinsic qualities found within the county.

The county steering committee knows the local attractions and what the area has for attractions.

Theme, Vision, Goalsand Byway Story:

The Roseau group discussed what makes up the WOTDS byway. The county has active florists that promote the Pink Lady Slipper along highway 11, they have volunteer groups that transplant them when they are in the way of construction projects. The group discussed the hockey theme along the byway and thought that would be a great theme for the byway. They mentioned the stanley cup has been to roseau and they have a block of land on HWY 11 that can be utilized for historical information and a statue that’s ties to the byway and the city. Each community along the byway has some type of history with hockey, the Christian Hockey stick, the Memorial Arena, updated and new hockey venues along the byway. The Polaris Event Center, Marvin Windows, Central Boiler, Mattracks, and other prominent industries along the route give an idea of the people who live in Northern MN. The northern lights was was discussed as a significant part of the byway. Attracting the birding community to come visit communities along the byway and bring the checkbook, because everyone wants to stimulate the economy. Introduce the birding community to the Pine to Prairie birding route, and all the birding sites in NW MN.

•Maintain or improve the scenic quality of the byway.

Get funding for hockey statues. MNDOT (Scenic byway, enhancements, SR2S all compete for the same pot of money.) Have district one pay for some projects in D2.

Promote birding sites like this one.

•Provide for the safety of all visitors through improvements in road infrastructure: turnouts, turning lanes, wayshowing, wide shoulders for bikers and walkers.

•Local communities, businesses and agencies support and promote each other along the byway.

•Market the byway to traditional visitors as well as niche groups (birders, motorcyclists, etc)

•Have visitor information available via a wide-variety of media: maps, brochures, rack cards, interactive webpage, smartphone apps, etc.
