University Institute of Legal Studies (UILS) was established as constituent department of Panjab University, in the academic session 2004-05. During a short span of time, it has emerged as one of the premier legal Institute with a unique blend of tradition and modernity. Its mission is to equip the students with the skills to comprehend and diagnose the intricacies of various legal and other inter-disciplinary issues and devise solutions to these problems through analysis and reasoning.

The Centre for Trade Laws and Dispute Resolution (CTDR) is created with the collective ingenuity of UILS (University Institute of Legal Studies) and Straus Institute for Dispute Resolution (University of Pepperdine) to promote interdisciplinary research in the field of trade law and dispute resolution. The purpose of the CTDR (Centre for Trade Laws and Dispute Resolution) covers the following aspects:

  • To ensure thorough interdisciplinary research comprising diverse fields like business laws, trade laws, economic laws, commercial arbitration and investment treaty arbitration to bring out some unconventional and operative techniques that can bring some substantive changes in the field of dispute resolution.
  • To conduct seminars and conferences in order to assimilate the distinguished veterans from all over the world to embrace us with vast insights on this topic and how can it can be implemented in Indian scenario.

For the past two decades our foray into organizing moot court competitions in association with top law schools and universities has yielded satisfying experience in helping improve research, writing and argument skills of the participating students, besides sensitizing students in unsettled areas of law for development of jurisprudence. Buoyed by the encouraging results, we expanded our activities with Essay competitions in major areas of law & social sciences. Enthused by the overwhelming response, we have now embarked upon a Judgment writing competition in all our moots. The idea is to have a clinical approach to the issues at hand with an analytical mind and acquire the clarity to sum up the issues with a sense of just balance. In short a comprehensive platform is created for the students to develop into a full-fledged legal professional.

COLLABORATION

University Institute of Legal Studies, Panjab University, Chandigarh has partnered with SuranaSurana International Attorneys, Chennai to hold a"SuranaSurana-UILS International Essay Competition on Corporate Law, 2018". It is a partnership between corporate and academic institution with an aim to imbibe the research inclination among the students fraternity. The objective of the competition is to undertake advanced study and research in the emerging areas of international trade, sustainable development and human rights and to bring about the publications which can positively contribute towards providing clarity in the grey areas.

RULES AND GUIDELINES FOR THE ESSAY COMPETITION

  1. ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA
  • The Competition is open to the students who are pursuing five year integrated Law course/LL.B./LL.M./M.Phil./ Ph.D.. or any other Undergraduate or Master courses (other than Law) in any university across the World.
  • Students of the Institute of Chartered Accounts of India, the Institute of Cost Accountant of India&The Institute of Company Secretaries of India are also eligible to participate. However, those who have completed either theirChartered Accountant/ Cost Accountant/ Company Secretary degrees/courses are not eligible.
  • The participants must also send a certificate from the Head of the Institution certifying that the candidate is a bonafide student of the University/ College/Institute.
  • If any Student of the UILS is positioned amongst the top three, he/she will not be eligible for the top three prizes but will be felicitated in recognition of his/her performance with a special prize by the SuranaSurana International Attorneys, Chennai at the Prize Distribution function.

The theme for the essay is kept broad in nature. The participants are allowed to take anyparticular sub-theme or can mold it keeping it intact with the central theme of the essay.

  1. GUIDELINES FORSUBMISSION
  • The essay must be written in English only.
  • Only one essay per participant may be submitted. Multiple or incomplete submissions lead to disqualification.
  • Co-authorship to a maximum of two authors is permitted. In case of co-authorship, separate Registration Form must be filled for each author.
  • The students who have made a solo entry and as a co-author also will be treated as multiple entries and it will lead to rejection of the second submission (The entry which is received first will be entertained)
  • Only original essays will be considered for the competition. No part of it should have been published earlier nor should it be under consideration for publication in a contest elsewhere. Moreover, any form of plagiarism will result in disqualification of essay. Neither UILS nor SuranaSurana International Attorneys, Chennai will be responsible for the act of plagiarism.Any Identification Mark in any part of the essay is liable to cancellation.
  • Registration form is to be sent along with the essay. The registration form must be duly signed and sealed by the Head of College/Institute/University. (Available in download form on website). In case of unavailability of the head of the institution any senior faculty may sign the same. Or you may send the scanned copy of your Identity Card of the current academic session.

Length of the essay

  • The submission shall consist of an abstract, main text and bibliography.
  • An abstract should not be more than 200 words inclusive of title and keywords.
  • The essay should not be more than 2500-3000 words (excluding Footnotes and abstract).
  • Footnotes must conform to theStandard Indian Legal Citation (SILC) format and must include a description of each authority adequate enough to allow a reasonable reader to identify and locate the authority in a publication of generalcirculation.

  • The name of the winner will be displayed on the website and also on the notice board of website. Separate intimation will also be sent to each of the winner through email.

  • The participants are responsible for the originality of the work and agree to indemnify the University Institute of Legal Studies, Panjab University and SuranaSurana International Attorneys, Chennai from and against any claims, suits and damages based on any claim of copyright infringement or plagiarism or unauthorized use. If at any point in time it comes to light that an infringement or plagiarism has taken place, the certificates issued will be revoked, the prize will be called back and the said occurrence will be mentioned on the web and through print/electronic/ social media.
