WHERE TO DETECT

Site acquisition and retention of productive search locations is and has been an issue for years to the detecting community. In Eastern USA access to lands of interest has long depended on the research and persistence of the individual detectorist. West of the Mississippi where much of the land is held in public trust opportunities to prospect or detect have been easier to come by. As the BLM and other government agencies become more aggressive in limiting areas open to public recreation a relatively new organization has been formed to help citizens gain and or retain use of open space. Pubic land for the People, Inc. exists to promote preserving public land use for the people. This group operates from 3700 Santa Carlotta Street, La Cresventa, CA91214-1048. Much information about them can be found on their website at . One of the most helpful items in their arsenal is the “Orange Card” which provides guidelines for handling challenges to detecting/prospecting instigated by local or government officials. Current issues can be reviewed in PLP’s newsletter the Sentry. P/WMDAS members are encouraged to learn more about this group. Membership is available through PLP membership chairman Paul Coambs (805) 443-7868 or . Additional information on PLP will be available at P/WMDAS membership meetings.

Code Red to Santa

All P/WMDAS members are reminded to contact Santa ASAP to let him know that this year’s P/W Christmas extravaganza will be held at a new location. The event has been moved to the Putnam National Golf Club at 187 Hill Street, Mahopac, NY10541. The site boasts ample parking, spacious dining rooms, great acoustics and best of all PLENTY OF FOOD guaranteed. Ted and Rich have done a great job in securing this new venue for the club. There will be beaucoup raffle prizes and we have been advised on good authority that snow on the first Saturday in December just ain’t gonna happen! So call, write, twitter, or e-mail the old boy at the pole and tell him to join us for a jolly good time.

PutnamCounty History Conference

Several members of P/WMD&AS attended the PutnamCounty History Conference held at the Mahopac Library on Saturday March 19th. Member Jim See was kept busy all day handing out literature of historical interest to attendees while also answering questions regarding points of historic interest in the local area. Dr Sallie Sypher presented an interesting hypothesis answering the oft asked question of what caused the breakaway of Putnam from DutchessCounty. Of special interest to our group was the presentation by Dr. Eugene Boesch covering aspects of the archeology of Colonial houses whose remains may still be seen in the PutnamCounty landscape.

Several new contacts were made which hopefully will help put P/WMDAS in a positive light within the History/Archaeology community. All members are urged to cooperate in any way possible to gain the trust of the general public. Following the Code of Ethics and supporting the local Historian are two great ways to accomplish this goal.

Beginner’s Luck OR No Justice*

Recently 4 year old James Hyatt of Billericay, England while metal detecting a field in Hockley, got “quite a strong buzz” from his machine. Digging down 6 to 8 inches he and his dad got a flash of gold. According to the BritishMuseum this flash was a 16th century locket quite likely depicting the Virgin Mary. The jewel weighed in at 8.68g with a gold content of up to 73%. The locket has been declared treasure trove and valued at L2.5m. This tidy sum, by British law, must be split equally between the finders and the landowner. There certainly is justice in the equitable disposition of the valued find, but a beginner making such a find, where’s the justice in that? Oh well, there’s got to be a hoard of clads waiting for us experienced detectorists out there somewhere!
