Competition Overview

This WorldSkills UK competition focuses on all the essential requirements for a successful career as a metalwork specialist in the engineering industry.
The competition has been designed to reflect the role of an advanced metal fabricator and meet industry standards.
They will be asked to complete a range of fabrication related tasks including:

  • Assembly
  • Cutting
  • Forming
  • Joining
  • Marking out
  • Shaping

Competency / Working Environment
Knowledge and understanding of working environment including:
  • comprehension and compliance with industry standards and laws relating to safety, security and hygiene

  • precautions for the safe use of mechanically and thermal cutting equipment
  • precautions for the safe use of mechanically and hand operated bending and forming equipment

Knowledge and understanding of marking out techniques:
  • Be familiar with various types of technical drawing used Understand basic calculations used
  • Be aware of various measuring methods used, for example:- rulers, tapes, height gauges and callipers
  • Identify the difference between a material list and cutting list
  • Be familiar with the various types of methods used for flat pattern development, for example, parallel line, radial line triangulations development methods.

Competency / Cutting techniques
Knowledge and understanding of cutting techniques:
  • Understand how to cut/grind various materials to specified tolerances using mechanical machinery such as, shears, corner shears, saws and grinding
  • Have the knowledge to manually thermal cut low carbon steel to specified tolerances using cutting wheels, circle cutters and guides
  • Have the knowledge to drill, tap, ream, countersink and punch holes to various sizes and tolerances on various materials

Competency / Forming techniques
Knowledge and understanding of forming techniques:

  • Have the knowledge to use a flat bar bender to bend low carbon steel

Knowledge and understanding of correct finishing techniques:
  • Have the knowledge on edge cleaning of the project with a file, wire brushing, grinding paper and de-burring of holes and edges
  • Have the knowledge on weld cleaning, wire brushing, chipping
NOTE: Excessive cleaning and polishing of the project is NOT allowed and NO chemical agentsare allowed to enhance the finished project

  • Apply appropriate finishing techniques to the projet

  • Demonstrate appropriate edge cleaning and de-burring of edges and holes methods
  • Demonstrate appropriate weld cleaning techniques
NOTE: Computer-drawing are prohibited in the competition work area, rough drawings are ONLY allowed in the competitors work area, during the competition.

Note: Core Competencies are tested, identified and measured as recognition of the competition level and duration. The severity of the marking schedule is regulated in relation to WorldSkills international standards as follows:

Heats circa 50%

  • National circa 75%
  • Team UK 100%

General Instructions

  1. Maximum working time is 7 hours at regional heats and 11 hours at the National Final
  2. At the start of the competition an allotted time will be allocated for work planning. This time is not part of the working time.
  3. The competition will consist of 1 task(s).
  4. All supplied equipment and materials must be accurately checked by the competitor upon commencing the competition.
  5. All materials and equipment must be marked out/used in the most economical method.
  6. Competitors will lose marks for any misplaced, lost or spoiled materials and/or equipment, where this is the result of competitor error.
  7. Minimum marks will not be awarded for dimensional accuracy or technical perfection where instructions have been disobeyed
  8. Competitors will lose marks for each minor breach of the Health & safety rules. Where a competitor puts themselves or any other person at risk as a result of a Health & Safety breach, the task will be stopped. Where a task is stopped due to a Health & Safety risk, the judge will decide if the task can be continued safely.
