Vocabulary for AchievementIntroductory Course: A selection of EIGHT units from the new VFA book dealing with the vocabulary most directly useful for the year.

ESL classes will have a simplified vocabulary section in the CG based on the first SIX of the lessons below

VfA UNITS: 1, 3, 4, 6, 11, 18, (19, 22)–

Heinemann Skills in English book 1: A selection of lessons and activities from the book. The emphasis is on the use of adjectives and adverbs to improve writing skills.

UNITS: 1, 3, 6: three longer written texts must be done so as to ensure that the CG is less easily predictable

1)‘Shilling pie’

2)‘Beowulf’(NOT ESL classes)

3)‘The Witches’

Weaker groups concentrate on these texts, and fill in with other activities at the teacher’s discretion; stronger groups have plenty of other activities to do.

Suggestion to use the story openings pages 49-51 as first lessons of the year –

Possibility to start with descriptions of people pages 33-35 and then go on to The Witches, followed by Persephone, Beowulf, Shilling Pie in that order

B.Ginsbach will be “checking” the November Composition Groupée paper.

a)The eight (ESL = 6) selected units from VFA

b)Seen text

c)Unseen text :

Vocabulary for Achievement intro. Course : A selection of EIGHT units from the new VFA book dealing with the vocabulary that will be most useful for non-fiction studies.

ESL classes will have a simplified vocabulary section in the CG based on the first SIX of the lessons below

VfA UNITS: 2, 5, 7, 8, 13, 14, (15, 25)

Heinemann Skills in English Book 1: A selection from later in the book dealing with non-fiction.

UNITS: 9, 11, 14 Here the emphasis must be on improving paragraphing skills and the organisation of written work and the different types of writing, formal and informal, that students will have to do. There will not be time to do the units in their entirety. All teachers should do:

“Aliens in the desert” (pages 106-113)

“The Vikings section” (pages 93-95)

List of possible readers : I’m Telling you They’re Aliens – Mortal Engines – Granny – The Tulip Touch – The Secret Garden- Home is a Place Called Nowhere…..

WRITING PROGRAMME : Factual writing to explain & to inform.

April to June 2009

Vocabulary for Achievement: All lessons up to lesson 25 to be done so that there can be the mammoth vocabulary quiz at the beginning of June.

ESL groups could have a simplified version of the mammoth quiz (teacher to decide)

Heinemann Skills in English: Emphasis on poetry and dialogue for theatre type activities in the summer.

UNITS: 2, 5, 7

A suggestion for the three lessons after the spring CG is that one is for VFA, one for poetry and one for theatre and in particular writing a script followed by improvisation and then their writing their own scripts either adapting the dialogue from the reader or inventing their own.

Possible to do all of lesson 2, using ‘At the match-Harry’s monologue’ as a basis for theatre group work (using gesture and sound effects)

Recommended to just do the dialogue page 58 for theatre work (good for all levels and as a basis for drama classes as it concentrates on different voice levels)

Lesson 7 has bits that may be too demanding for certain students and so you may do Jamaica Market, The Sound Collector, Alligator and the Wreck of the Hesperus concentrating on the similes used as they will be needing them in 5ème

EMT classes: A MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S DREAM (abridged edition)

45 min.WORKSHOPS offered during 6 weeks to 15 students maximum(mixed ability):
