Home Visits and Emergency Calls

Requests for home visits should, if at all possible, be made BEFORE 10.00 A.M. Calls after 10.00 a.m. can seriously disrupt the smooth running of the practice and lead to delays in treatment for serious ill patients. Whenever possible please try to come to the Surgery. If babies and children are unwell they would be seen more quickly by attending the Surgery. If it is cold, they can be wrapped up well and brought to the Surgery quite safely. Parents who have more than one child can usually contact a friend or relative willing to look after the rest of the family allowing them to attend the Surgery with the unwell child. When requesting a home visit, patients if not in bed, should be dressed in a dressing gown and have a urine sample ready for testing.

Out of Hours Calls on weekday nights and weekends is covered by G-MEDS. (Leaflet available from reception)

To all Mintlaw Practice Patients

In order to improve the efficiency and diminish annoyance to both patients and doctors we request that patients adhere to the following simple set of instructions in the event of an accident or emergency.

1.SERIOUS ACCIDENT - road traffic accident, electrocution, a bad fall where a patient is unconscious or obviously seriously injured: Dial 999 - Call ambulance then Call Doctor.

2.MINOR OR MODERATE INJORY - Do Not go straight to the Peterhead Community Hospital, but Phone Surgery or duty doctor for advice and instructions as to where to attend for treatment. The doctor will advise you to go either to PeterheadCommunityHospital or to Mintlaw Surgery, depending on what is more convenient. Phoning and asking advice will make things easier for both yourself and the doctor leaving you to be seen and attended to more quickly and efficiently and prevent long inconvenient waiting time for attention at the CommunityHospital.

We thank you for your help in this matter.

If we keep sending reminder letters and your children are up to date with their immunisations - please tell us, so that our records can be brought up to date.

Adult Immunisation

All adults should be vaccinated against Tetanus/Diptheria. Practice Nurse will advise on course of vaccinations.

Cervical Smear Test

The nurses are available and qualified to carry out these tests during any of their clinics. The practice policy is to ensure that every woman aged 20-60 years of age is tested every 3 years unless the cytologists recommend repeating the smear more often.

•Give the receptionist notice if you are unable to attend

•Be patient if the doctor is running late

•Not to contact the duty doctor out of hours unless it is an emergency that cannot wait until morning.

INFORMATION FOR PATIENTS

Burns and Scalds

Apply large quantities of cold water to the affected area as soon as possible and maintain this until the pain subsides. This may take as long as 15 minutes! If the skin is unbroken but blistered apply a loose, dry dressing. If the burn is larger than 4 or 5 inches in diameter or if the skin is broken, consult your doctor as soon as possible.

Colds

Even in this day and age there is still no cure for the common cold. Stay indoors, keep warm and take plenty of drinks. If you are feverish or have a headache go to bed and take Aspirin or Paracetamol. Antibiotics have no effect and should be avoided.

Chickenpox

On the first day a rash appears as small red patches 3-4mm across. Within a few hours of these developing, small blisters appear in the centre of these patches. During the next few days further spots will appear and the earlier ones will turn “crusty” and fall off. Oily Calamine Lotion may be applied to soothe the often severe itching. Cool baths may also help. The infectious period is from the onset of the rash until the skin lesions are dry and crusted - about 7 days. Children may return to school as soon as the last crusts have dropped off.

Minor Cuts and Grazes

Wash the wound thoroughly with water and a little soap. To stop bleeding apply a clean handkerchief or dressing firmly to the wound for about 5 minutes. Cover with a clean, dry dressing.

Diarrhoea

Diarrhoea is usually caused by a viral infection and is therefore unable to be treated directly. Avoid solid food and milk and drink plenty of clear fluids. If the diarrhoea persists for more than 3 days, or blood is passed, the doctor should be consulted. Diarrhoea accompanied by vomiting in young children and babies needs careful attention. It should be treated by stopping solid foods and feeding a solution of boiled water with a teaspoon of sugar and half a teaspoon of salt to the pint. If symptoms fail to improve within 24 hours, or the child seems excessively weak, then consult your doctor.

Gastroenteritis

Gastroenteritis describes a group of diseases affecting the stomach or part of the intestine. Symptoms are often diarrhoea, sickness and stomach ache. Because the lining of the stomach is likely to be inflamed, medicines are often immediately vomited up. Large quantities of water, orange juice, milk or thin soup should be taken to counter the effects of dehydration. Consult your doctor if symptoms persist for more than a day or, in the case of babies or very young children, 6 hours.

German Measles (Rubella)

The rash appears during the first day and usually covers the body, arms and legs in small pink patches about 2-4mm and doesn’t itch. No other symptoms are usually present apart from occasional aching joints. It is infectious from 2 days before the rash appears, until the rash disappears in about 4 or 5 days from that date. The only danger is to unborn babies and, therefore, it is important that all contacts are informed in order that anyone who may be pregnant can contact their doctor.

Head lice

These creatures, contrary to popular belief, prefer clean hear and are, therefore, not a sign of poor personal hygiene. Medicated head lotion can be obtained from the chemist without prescription.

Insect Bites and Stings

Antihistamine tablets can be obtained from the chemist without prescription and will usually relieve most symptoms.

Note: Bee stings should be scraped away rather that “plucked” in order to avoid squeezing the contents of the venom sac into the would.

Measles

The rash is blotchy and red and appears on the face and body around the fourth day of illness. It is at its most infectious from 2 or 3 days before the rash appears until 8 or 10 days after that date.

Note: Immunisation can prevent this disease.

Mumps

Symptoms are swelling of the glands in front of one or other ear often followed, after a couple of days, by swelling in front of the other ear. It is infectious from 2 or 3 days before the swelling appears until 8 or 10 days after that date. If the pain is severe you should consult your doctor.

Nose Bleeds

Sit in a chair (leaning forward with your mouth open) and pinch your nose just below the bone for approximately 10 minutes by which time the bleeding should have stopped. If symptoms persist, consult your doctor.

Sprains

Firstly apply a cold compress, containing ice if possible, for 15 to 30 minutes to reduce the swelling. Apply firmly a crepe bandage and give the sprain plenty of rest until all discomfort has subsided. Further strain will inevitably lead to further swelling and a longer recovery period.

Stomach Ache

Most attacks are not serious and are usually caused by indigestion or wind. A hot water bottle will often relieve the symptoms and in the case of indigestion a teaspoon of bicarbonate of soda in half a glass of water will help. If the pain lasts longer than 8 hours or increases in intensity you should consult your doctor.

Sunburn

Treat as for other bums with cold water to remove the heat. Calamine Lotion will relieve the irritation whilst Paracetamol will also help. Children are particularly susceptible to sunburn and great care should be taken to avoid over-exposure to the harmful effects of the sun.

Sore Throats

Over 95% of sore throats are caused by a virus. Treat by a simple analgesic such as Paracetamol or Aspirin and a gargle eg. a teaspoonful of salt per pint of boiled water. If the symptoms are severe or fail to respond to the above measures see the doctor.

Warts and Verrucae

Treatment can be obtained from the chemist without prescription for this common problem.
