Engagement Department

A key element of the department’s purpose is to significantly build its public profile and wider awareness of the Movement to increase external influence in the media with partners. Under the leadership of the Director, all teams will work towards delivering the agreed WAGGGS strategy, engage collaboratively with other teams including leading or being part of cross-organisational projects, support and provide expertise to MOs as needed.

The creation of the Engagement Department brings together three distinct functions: Communications, Advocacy and Fund Development each led by a senior manager reporting to the Director. The communication team is responsible for our global profile and branding, to ensure we are seen globally as a modern, impactful organisation advocating and delivering changes which benefit girls and young women through our Member Organizations.

What we are looking for

The successful applicant will work closely with the Membership Department to ensure that communications to our membership are in line with WAGGGS’ media strategy and Member Organization needs, this includes taking note of the diverse nature of our Member Organizations.

You will develop effective communications with our external stakeholders that supports our brand and strategic messages. You will work closely with relationship holders in the Membership and Advocacy teams to develop communications that increase awareness of WAGGGS.

You will have a proven track record of preparing communications to support senior stakeholders and working in a membership driven organisation. French, Arabic and/or Spanish language skills are desirable.

Job Purpose

To provide professional media, public relations and communications services to support our advocacy, fundraising, membership and programmes objectives. The communication team is responsible for our global profile and branding, to ensure we are seen globally as a modern, impactful organisation advocating and delivering changes which benefit girls and young women through our Member Organisations and global partners.

This role is the Communication Team lead on membership engagement.

Job Context

Girl Guiding and Girl Scouting is the World's only movement for every and any girl. We are the organisation that keeps the Movement thriving, united and growing.

This role operates within the context of a volunteer led global charitable organisation with 146 Member Organisations.

Key Accountabilities

  1. Primary Responsibilities - Membership

To work closely with the Membership Department to ensure that communications to our membership are in line with WAGGGS’ media strategy and Member Organisations needs, this includes taking note of the diverse nature of our Member Organisations.

To be first contact for the Membership Department for advice and support around developing communications in response to Membership Organisation concerns.

To develop networks with Communication teams from Member Organisations to look for opportunities to build Membership Organisations capacity and share good practice.

With the Membership Department, put in place methods to capture the effectiveness of our on-line messaging and campaigns including how they are used by Membership Organisations.

2. Wider Communications Responsibilities

To develop effective communications with your external stakeholders that support our brand and strategic messages and to work closely with relationship holders in Membership and Advocacy teams to develop communications that increase awareness of WAGGGS.

Engage with wider WAGGGS functions to ensure brand is communicated effectively and consistently. Create key messages to key audiences, Membership Organisations, Corporate partners and donors and global organisations.

Develop content for all WAGGGS functions, including core communications materials: annual reports, standard articles, materials, and core messages. With the Membership Department develop a variety of supporting materials, newsletters and communications for engaging Membership Organisations with the Membership Department.

Provide communications expertise for programme activities, to ensure effective programme delivery in line with our strategic aims and core messaging/brand.

Support delivery of media strategy including researching and drafting briefings and materials and support the CEO in meeting with senior stakeholders.

Develop digital reach with a focus on mobile and social platforms that position WAGGGS as the global hub within the movement, building capability within Member Organisations.

Work with Membership Organisations to assist in media outreach work, share expertise and deliver common messages to increase our presence and reach.

Be creative in identifying opportunities to raise awareness of WAGGGS through the news agenda, membership interactions, and wider programme activity.

Take responsibility for own professional development and keep abreast of new developments in communications and media, particulalry digital media developments, sharing knowledge and good practice across the team.

Essential / Desirable
Qualifications/ experience
Experience of preparing communications materials to support senior stakeholders.
Experience of working in a membership driven organisation.
Extensive experience of web based technology and social media tools.
Experience of writing and editing a range of communications materials (online and offline).
Skills/ knowledge
Ability to identify opportunities and linkages to strategic aims.
An understanding of youth issues.
Strong IT skills in terms of MS Office and opportunities presented by social media.
Understanding of diversity of Membership Organisations.
Excellent relationship building skills. / Strong independent network of media contacts.
Subject matter experience of gender equality, girls’ empowerment, gender based violence and/or sustainability
Personal qualities
Able to demonstrate a commitment to and be a role model for WAGGGS’ organisational values of: Member Driven; Brave; Inclusive; Empowering; Transparent; Professional.
The ability to work under pressure and to tight deadlines.
A passion and commitment for issues affecting girls and young women on a global level, and demonstrable ability to engage with girls and young women, either through a professional or personal background.
