Presenters:Dr. Donna Mahoney & Ms. Nora Bloomingdale
Donna Mahoney, Ph.D., is an Associate Professor and core faculty member in theClinical Psychology program at the Illinois School of Professional Psychology at Argosy/Schaumburg. Dr. Mahoney has taught for twelve years in the areas of anxiety disorders and phobias, adolescent psychopathology and treatment, psychoanalysis and psychotherapy, self-psychology, theories of psychopathology, ethics and the law, and couples and family treatment. Her private practice, located in Barrington, specializes in the treatment of anxiety-related disorders and phobias. She has extensive clinical experience, spanning twenty-five years. Dr. Mahoney has published in the areas of panic disorder and OCD, and is currently co-authoring an article relevant to posttraumatic stress disorder and complex trauma. Additionally, she serves as a consultant to clinicians interested in broadening their clinical repertoire in working with anxietyand the treatment of childhood fears and phobias. Dr. Mahoney’s other interests lie in the theoretical and clinical integration of psychodynamic and cognitive-behavioral interventions.
Nora Bloomingdale, M.A., is a fifth year student in the Clinical Psychology program at the Illinois School of Professional Psychology at Argosy/Schaumburg. Nora completed her Diagnostic Practicum at Hartgrove Hospital, which included administering full batteries on patients, as well as co-leading group therapy on each inpatient unit. Nora is currently in an Advanced Therapy Practicum setting focusing on treatment of pathologies with foster/adopted individuals and their families using a blend of cognitive-behavioral interventions and other therapies. Nora will begin her internship at an APA accredited site later this year working at an inpatient hospital with individuals suffering from severe pathologies. Nora’s Clinical Research Project (dissertation) focuses on the relationship between suicide risk, levels of anxiety and isolation, and gender.
Program Description:
This presentation will provide a CBT approach to anxiety disorders, highlighting treatment techniques and strategies, and integrating case material and clinical vignettes.
Goals/Learning Objectives:
At the conclusion of this presentation, attendees will be able to:
1.)Explain the role of psychological and neurobiological factors associated with the pathogenesis and course of anxiety;
2.)Describe basic principles and evidenced based treatment approaches, particularly in relation to a cognitive-behavioral treatment model of anxiety;
3.)Learn to assess and diagnose common co-morbid disorders and identify factors associated with complex cases;
4.)Learn to apply the theoretical constructs to specific clinical vignettes and situations.
