CLC RA ROUNDTABLE SOUTH – APRIL 10, 2017

Location: Fairfield Woods Branch Library

Topic: Genre Study: Poetry and Short Stories

  1. Introductions
  2. Short Stories RA Presentation
  3. Poetry RA Presentation
  4. Discussion:
  5. Which readers are looking for short stories and poetry, and why?
  6. Which readers aren’t, but might enjoy it?
  7. How can we share short stories and poetry outside of collections?
  8. How does RA for these mediums vary with audience?
  9. What are the challenges of RA for poetry and short stories?

Additional notes:

  • A good resource for learning about poetry in libraries is Poet’s House
  • Check out their Poetry in the Branches:
  • Short stories and poetry are both great for outreach visits, especially for seniors
  • Also great outreach to local writer’s groups—feature their work!
  • Don’t forget other formats, like audio, for poetry RA
  • Poetry doesn’t just have to circulate in bound volumes—print poems for displays!
  • A good resource is Poem in Your Pocket—already formatted
  • Poetry and short story collections are great for patrons looking for a quick read
  • Patrons often have a negative reaction to being told a book is short stories; try:
  • “It’s a novel where each chapter can stand alone.”
  • When stories are related, discuss how they are interlinked
  • Put on displays for stealth RA—more likely to be taken
  • When patrons say “I don’t like short stories,” they usually mean literary collections
  • Many genre authors and readers love short stories
  • Especially common in sci-fi, mystery, and romance
  • Good match for TV fans (ie GRRM stories for a Game of Thrones watcher)
  • Both short stories and poetry are a medium—not a genre!
  • The “dreaded 800s” is where many collections collect dust
  • Could we ever shelve these collections in with fiction, for better browsing?
  • Would be great for popular authors working in many genres
  • Good RA question: “What magazines/newspapers do you read?”
  • If they mention New Yorker, Esquire, etc—short stories may be a good fit
  • Look outside library resources and book sections for poetry reviews
  • The James Patterson Book Shots series isn’t working in ANY library (phew!)

Next meeting:Monday, May 8, 10am-12pm

  • Location: Westport Library
  • Topic: RA for Digital Collections
