CLASS TITLE:SENIOR REGISTERED NURSE SUPERVISOR - F/C

ALLOCATION FACTOR(S)

This is nursing work supervising one of the following areas: (1) all professional nursing personnel in a hospital or clinic on an assigned shift or in a unit on a 24-hour basis; (2) instructors teaching nursing practices and methods; or (3) the activities of a specialized nursing team which requires training beyond that required to be licensed as a registered professional nurse. The employee(s) in the position(s) allocated to this class must spend a minimum of 75 percent of their time performing duties which involve contact with patients/inmates in a correctional or forensic facility or institution. The primary duty of the employee(s) in the position(s) allocated to this class is to spend the majority of time communicating with, motivating, training and evaluating employees, planning and directing their work; and having the authority to hire, transfer, suspend, layoff, recall, promote, discharge, assign, reward or discipline subordinate employees or to effectively recommend such actions.

  • Motivates employees to improve the quality and quantity of work performed.
  • Plans work loads, work flows, deadlines, work objectives and time utilization with employees.
  • Evaluates employees through establishing evaluation criteria and responsibilities and meeting regularly with employees to ensure the established criteria are met.
  • Trains employees in methods for performing an effective and efficient job.
  • Communicates on a regular basis with employees both individually and in staff meetings.
  • Directs the work of employees to ensure best use of time and resources.
  • Supervises the activities of nurses providing psychiatric nursing services in conjunction with individual and group counseling techniques.
  • Develops an interdepartmental communications system with other treatment teams for continuity of service delivery.
  • Initiates new and revised treatment approaches and incorporates them into nursing practices.
  • Provides services to other departments, nursing personnel, and the community in an effort to promote mental health awareness and understanding.
  • Supervises subordinate nursing instructors in teaching nursing practices and methods to professional nursing students and nonprofessional aide personnel.
  • Supervises and participates in the preparation of lessons, plans, tests and reports.
  • Supervises and participates in teaching students elementary and advanced nursing arts including housekeeping, care of patients, charting procedures, and administration of medication.
  • Attends and participates in meetings on admissions, graduation, promotions, and curriculum.
  • Supervises and participates in conducting nursing practices research to improve the medical treatment rendered to patients.
  • Identifies and evaluates illnesses and injuries common to university patients.
  • Meets and counsels with relatives and visitors of the patients, and provides consultation on patients, personal problems.
  • Schedules and coordinates nursing and medical care for patients.
  • Serves as shift supervisor.
  • Provides for orientation and training of new personnel.
  • Performs related work as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Licensure as a Registered Professional Nurse in accordance with Florida Statute 464 or eligible to practice nursing in accordance with Florida Administrative Code 210-8.27 and three years of professional nursing, psychiatric nursing or nursing instruction experience.
  • A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in nursing or nursing education can substitute for one year of the required experience.
  • A master's degree from an accredited college or university in nursing, psychiatric nursing or nursing education can substitute for two years of the required experience.
