City of Santa Monica Farmers Markets

The Santa Monica Farmers Markets are committed to promoting healthy eating and sustainable agriculture in California by providing fresh agricultural products from small farms to urban customers, thereby building community and preserving California farmland.

The City of Santa Monica oversees the operation and management of four Certified Farmers’ Markets (CFMs). An estimated 900,000 shoppers visit the markets every year. Collectively, they provide customers year-round with a selection of fresh, seasonal produce, flowers, meats and eggs that are pre-eminent among farmers' market programs in the nation.

Join our dynamic fast-paced team as a Farmers Market Volunteer Intern. We are looking for responsible, dedicated, outgoing students to assist with on-site Farmers Market operations and in our administrative office. Interns have the opportunity to apply for this internship and select a focus in social media/marketing, education, statistics, or a proposed an area of focus and work with Farmers Market staff to develop goals and projects in that area.

Time Commitment: Minimum ten hours per week for ten weeks or more. If applying for the education internship, the candidate must be available Wednesdays from 9:00 am – 11:30 am.

Social Media/MarketingIntern responsibilities include:

  • Researching and writing relevant weekly social media posts
  • Utilizing Twitter, Facebook and Instagram to further the goals of the SMFMs
  • Research and propose ways to strengthen the SMFMs brand recognition in the community

Education Intern responsibilities include:

  • Assisting Education Coordinator in teaching market field trip classes
  • Designing lesson plans and materials
  • Must be available Wednesdays from 9:00am – 11:30am

Statistics Intern responsibilities include:

  • Assisting Farmers Market management team in planning, collecting, analyzing, interpretingand presenting data

Qualifications:

  • College age or above
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Responsible and reliable
  • Excellent computer skills
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Excel, Word, PowerPoint, or Publisher
  • Ability to work independently as well as with a team
  • Enthusiasm for Farmers Markets, small farmers and locally grown produce, social media, marketing, education and environmental sustainability

This is an unpaid volunteer internship. This internship requires a minimum time commitment of ten hours per week for a period of ten weeks or more.
