2. CIES 2014 - Hosting a Reception at CIES 2014
Hosting a Reception at CIES 2014
Every year a number of institutions and groups host receptions open to conference attendees. These receptions offer excellent opportunities for institutions and groups to raise awareness about and interest in their organizations and activities.
At CIES 2014 we will have an evening of concurrent receptions on Wednesday March 12, from 7 pm – 10 pm. While your group will be responsible for financing the catering, we will supply the room at no additional cost. Rooms will be allocated on a first come/first serve basis, so we encourage you to reserve your space today!

The College of Education at the University of Maryland invites applications for the position of Chair of the Department of Counseling, Higher Education, and Special Education (CHSE), which is a tenure-track faculty position at the rank of Professor. We seek a leader for this newly merged department to further advance its research, teaching, and service accomplishments as a unified department.
The Department of Counseling, Higher Education, and Special Education (CHSE) incorporates three outstanding former departments, all with programs having top rankings in U.S. News and World Report, 2014: Counseling and Personnel Services (ranked #1 for 14 years in a row), School Psychology (ranked #4), Higher Education (ranked #11), and Special Education (ranked #11).
A dynamic and diverse group of 36 tenure-track faculty representing seven specialty areas provides innovative and exemplary graduate and undergraduate education. - Demonstrated national or international leadership and scholarship in counseling psychology, school psychology, higher education, student affairs, comparative and international education, and special education, or related discipline
- Administrative experience in a role as department chair or other comparable experience
- Experience managing budgets
- Strong communication, interpersonal, and leadership skills

Education, Equality and Social Harmony:Asian Experiences in Comparative Perspective
Host: School of Education, Hangzhou Normal University
The relationship between education and social inequality has aroused increasingly acute concern in many Asian societies over recent years. This conference will invite participants to consider what we can learn from the experiences of developed and developing societies, within Asia and beyond, regarding the relationship between education, equality and stability or ‘harmony’ – both within particular societies, and in their relations with each other. This theme is intended to stimulate debate over what different societies can teach us regarding the balance to be struck between education’s role in promoting economically-relevant ‘skills’, and the other vital roles that it performs – in terms of political socialization, the distribution of opportunity, and the fostering of those capabilities necessary to the pursuit of a fulfilling life.
The conference will feature keynote addresses by the following distinguished scholars:

Hangzhou, famous for its scenic West Lake, was the capital of China during the Southern Song Dynasty (1123-1276). Relics of its historic past remain, and the city continues to attract large numbers of domestic and overseas tourists. University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN)
The PhD program, administered by Higher Education Training and Development (HETD), covers extensive areas in higher education including aspects of teaching and learning; management and leadership; policy studies; institutional research; professional and support services; and issues related to education in disciplines, among others. Applications are now invited from interested and prospective applicants for PhD in Higher Education program in 2014 at the School of Education, UKZN, Durban, South Africa.
I—Modalities: Modalities of the study under consideration:
Students may register for Full-time or Part-time study
- All students will be part of a cohort group which meets at least six times a year over a 3-day weekend for a 3-year period.
- At least four of the six 3-day weekend seminars will be extended over 7 to 10 days, that is, overlapping the 3-day weekend.
- Weekend seminar attendance is mandatory for all students.
- Full-time students and UKZN staff will receive fee remission for the first three years of the programme.
- In 2014 international students from across Africa and other countries will also be part of the cohort together with South African students.
International students are required to submit their qualification to the South African Qualifications Authority ( for evaluation. Only once the foreign qualification is evaluated as equivalent to a master’s degree and the student meets the minimum requirement can s/he be accepted for study and register at UKZN.
III—Seminars and Lectures: Experts in higher education from South Africa, Africa, Europe and elsewhere will be offering mandatory lectures, seminars, and workshops during the seminar weekends.
Students may be required to attend or take additional master’s modules depending on the research topic and their research education and training background to address any relevant knowledge and/or research gaps.
IV—Completion: Students are supported as a cohort by a group of supervisors together with their assigned supervisor/s to complete in a 3-year period, which is the length of time for which the seminar-based cohort model runs.
Full time students who do not finish during the 3-year period will be liable for continuation fees.
V—Recruitment: For the 2014 cohort, 30 students will be selected for the programme. Approximately half will be selected from South Africa and the rest will be from neighbouring SADC countries, Africa and elsewhere.
For international applicants, preference will be given to those interested in areas of leadership and management as part of the joint initiative between UKZN and several other institutions including Universities of Tampere and Helsinki (Finland), Uganda Management Institute and Makerere (Uganda).
VI—Fees: A differential non-refundable application fee is payable:
- South African students: R 175
- Students from Africa: R 420
- Students from outside Africa: USD 130.
