Q3: The question is required for all applicants of CAMEL 2016. Please choose ONE topic from the three below and underline the topic that you choose. (Minimum 200 words)
Issue A. News and Media (Topic: Developing Countries’ Global Impact and Soft Power)
We live in a world surrounded by media, and media of particular nations mainly constitute their global impact and soft power. It seems like the right to discourse has been monopolized by developed countries, but a rare glimmer of hope is offered by Al Jazeera, which has full competence against other famous media in the developed world. Thus, according to the positive case of Al Jazeera, what lessons can be suggested for China’s mainstream media and other Arabic media to breakout the encirclement built by Western media? And apart from the traditional media, what’s your opinion on the new media of developing countries under the shadow of Western media?
Issue B. International Relations(Topic: China and the Middle East)
The foundations of China’s engagement with the Middle East have been primarily economic in nature, and based on the trade of energy commodities. Also, the Middle East has assumed an important position in China’s global economic vision, which sees the Middle East as a key part of its contemporary “Silk Road” initiative. The cooperation outlook for both economic and cultural exchange will be worth further discussing. However, Chinese and Arabic cultures are different in a lot of the ways. If China wants to nurture constructive and cooperative relations with Arabic countries, where and how can countries from both sides find common grounds to achieve this?
Issue C. Social and Economic Problems(Topic: The Social Mobility in the Middle East)
The Arab countries have undergone great changes from agrarian (and Animal Husbandry) society to Modern industrial civilizations after World War Two. With the construction of nation-state and the modernization driving, the great changes of the social structure have taken place in Arab countries. The diversity is a basic characteristic for social structure evolution of Arab countries. The changes of ruling group caused the enormous transformation in regime, economic development, and the choice of modernization, the diplomatic idea and policies as well as social life in Arab countries. The growth of the social intermediate strata has impacted the foundation of traditional social structure, the changes of social relationship between urban and rural areas which have profoundly influenced on the political life, economic life and social life of Arab countries. In your opinion, how does the gap between the poor and the rich affect Social Mobility in the Middle East?
