Purpose of the role:

  • To be responsible for the management and development of the schools finance structure
  • To provide high quality leadership and management of the trust’s finance function to enable the trust to run smoothly, efficiently and effectively in the delivery of the trusts core aims
  • To lead the promotion and delivery of good financial management so that public money is safeguarded at all times and used appropriately, economically, efficiently and effectively.

Based at xxx Academy but may be the required to travel on occasions

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Maintain a secure overview of the management of all financial issues
  • Review Trust policies, processes and procedures to ensure compliance with various xexternal regulations including filing deadlines regarding VAT, PAYE, EFA, DfE, HMRC, Charity Commission and Companies Acts.
  • Provide efficient financial assistance to the Accounting Officer and the Board regarding all aspects of financial management within the Trust
  • Ensure all forms and returns required by the EFA and other regulatory bodies are prepared and submitted on time
  • Keep the CEO, the Board and other key personnel up to date with the latest developments and changes in finance matters
  • Support in ensuring the financial sustainability of the Trust
  • Advise the CEO and the Board on all matters relating to financial strategy and the impact of decisions on the financial position of the Trust.
  • Implement a sound system of internal control across the trust and monitor its effectiveness
  • Support in the preparation of financial statements in the format specified by the EFA and in accordance with the audit timetable
  • Manage the trust’s balance sheet to include fixed asset accounting and control account reconciliations
  • Co-ordinate internal and external audit processes and liaise with external regulators as required
  • Maintain a strategic medium term financial plan for the Trust
  • Prepare monthly management accounts to include variance analysis, balance sheet, key financial performanceindicators and cash flow projections
  • Assist in maintaining the Trust’s risk register
  • Maintain the Trusts finance related policies including the Finance Regulations
  • Provide training support and guidance for Directors and other key personnel
  • Coordinate the annual budget setting process
  • Oversee the Trust’s procurement strategy and processes ensuring that cost savings are madeand best value achieved
  • Receive, analyse and interpret financial reports and communications
  • Attend relevant committee meetings e.g. Finance, audit

AAT qualified or other equivalent accountancy qualification / 
School Business Management qualification / 
A record of Continuing Professional Development Activities / 
A working knowledge of charity and/or company accounting / 
Well developed ICT Skills / 
Knowledge of schools financial accounting systems / 
EXPERIENCE
Experience in the preparation of both statutory and management reports in a public sector organisation / 
Experience of managing a finance function / 
Ability to demonstrate the delivery of projects on time and to agreed specification / 
Knowledge and experience of range of financial management systems / 
Experience of working with a range of internal and external parties including non-finance personnel / 
Experience of reviewing internal controls systems and making recommendations for improvement / 
