PURPOSE STATEMENT:
Learners who demonstrate competence as described in the outcomes of this unit standard will be able to assemble pallets of packed fresh produce by:
  • Identify palletising material and explain the quality specifications that must be complied with
  • Assemble and stabilise pallets
  • Perform end of palletising activities
  • Report variations in quality trends

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE:
Learners accessing this unit standard will have demonstrated competence against literacy at ABET Level 3.
SPECIFIC OUTCOMES AND ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
Specific Outcome 1: / Identify palletising material and explain the quality specifications that must be complied with
Assessment Criteria:
1.1The material used when palletising packed produce are identified and their application or purpose explained

The range includes the material used at the workplace and includes but is not limited to pallets, corner pieces, strapping, netting, wrapping, securing sheets, identification labels, pallet coding labels, thermo couples
1.2The quality specifications of palletising material are explained according workplace standards
AssessmentCriterionRange:
The range includes those quality specification that is applicable to the workplace and includes but is not limited to quality of pallets (occurrence of moulds, pallet structure, pallet finish), quality of other palletising material
1.3The role of internal quality assurance functions is explained in terms of assuring the quality of assembled pallets
1.4The role of produce inspection services is explained in terms of assuring the quality of assembled pallets
1.5Industry terminology and jargon is understood and used correctly
Specific Outcome 2: / Assemble and stabilise pallets
Assessment Criteria:
2.1Packed produce are stacked according to the correct pattern
2.2Quality standards are maintained by recognizing and rejecting non-conforming palletizing material according to workplace standards
2.3Non-conforming packed produce is identified and rejected according to workplace standards
AssessmentCriterionRange:
The range includes those quality specification that is applicable to the workplace and includes but is not limited to stabilizing glue, labels, markings and codes, container filling
2.4The pallet is stabilized and secured according to workplace standards
AssessmentCriterionRange:
The range includes but is not limited to strapping the pallet, placement of corner pieces, placement of securing sheets, application of netting or wrapping
2.5Personal health, safety and environmental protection standards are maintained according to workplace procedures
2.6Food safety standards are maintained according to workplace procedures
Specific Outcome 3: / Perform end of palletising activities
Assessment Criteria:
3.1Pallet identification codes, labels and markings are applied according to quality standards and protocols
3.2Pallet monitoring devices are placed according to marketing protocols

The range includes but is not limited to could chain monitoring devices (inspection of thermo couples for proper functioning, placement of thermo couples)
3.3Pallet information is recorded according to marketing protocols and standard workplace procedures

Assessment Criteria:
4.1Variations and trends in quality standards are reported according to workplace procedures
4.2The impact of variations of quality standards are explained in terms of the affect on achievement of quality standards
ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS:
  • Assessors assessing learners against this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA
  • An institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this unit standard must be accredited as a provider through the relevant ETQA.
  • Moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant ETQA according to the moderation guidelines in the relevant qualification and the agreed ETQA procedures.
