Background

ASEMrecognizestheneedofengineersandothertechnicalprofessionalstodevelopandvalidatetheirskillsintechnicalmanagementastheyprogressthroughtheircareers.Tothatend,ASEMhascreatedtwolevelsofprofessionalcertification:Certified Associate in Engineering Management(CAEM)andCertified Professional in Engineering Management(CPEM).ASEMhasestablishedrequirementstobecomecertifiedattheASEMcertificationlevelsofCAEMorCPEM. Conditionsforrecertificationhavealsobeenestablished.

Certified Associate in Engineering Management

Theprofessionalcertificationatthislevelisdesignedforyoungtechnicalprofessionalsseekingtoestablishcredentialsinpreparationforearlytechnicalmanagementorsupervisoryassignments.Certificationisvalidforthreeyears.Thecriteriaforcertification atthislevelareasfollows:

Notes for CAEM:

(1)Copyofdegree transcripts (digital copy of official preferred; unofficial accepted with a copy of diploma)mustaccompanyapplication.Transcripts will be reviewed by a PDCE panel of 3 CPEMs and voted on to ensure appropriate rigor was attained in the course of the curriculum.

(2)EMBOK Technology and Engineering Fields must display technical subject matter from a minimum 5 of 11 Domains of Engineering Management.

(3)ASEM Membership is required to receive the discounted rate.

(4)No work experience required to pursue the CAEM.

(5)Undergraduates in programs in academic partnership receive a $25 discount in addition to the member discount ($125)

Certified Professional in Engineering Management

Notes for CPEM:

(2) Guidance on related EMBOK Technology or Engineering Fields are found in the EM Handbook for Certification. EMBOK Technology and Engineering Fields must display technical subject matter from a minimum 5 of 11 Domains of Engineering Management.

(3) CV or resume documenting work experience with supervisor contact information must be provided to validate professional experience.

(4) ASEM Membership is required to receive the discounted rate.

(5) Graduate students in academic partnership receive a $25 discount in addition to the member discount.

(6)Proctor discount: If an ASEM Certified Program is conducting a bulk CPEM certification (over 5 students in one sitting), and all are members, cost per exam will drop $25 per student. This option would still require the 3- year Minimum Professional Experience.

Examinations

TheCAEMlevelofprofessionalcertificationrequiressuccessfullypassingtheCAEMexamforallexceptthoseindividualswhoholdanMSdegreefromanASEMcertifiedgraduateprogram. AllindividualswishingtoattaintheCPEMlevelofcertificationmustsuccessfullycompletetheCPEMexam.

ExaminationProcess

1.Individualsdesiringtotaketheexammust:

  1. Applytotaketheexam(ElectronicApplicationForm)
  2. Paytherequiredexaminationfee
  3. Identifyathird-­‐partyproctor*fortheexam

2.Onceanindividualisauthorizedtotakeoneofthe exams,theexaminationwillbeproviderinoneoftwowaysbothutilizingaproctor*:

  1. Web-­‐based
  1. Identifyaproctor
  2. AusernameandpasswordfortheexamwillbegiventotheidentifiedproctortoallowaccesstotheexamontheASEMwebsite.
  3. Theproctorwillarrangeasuitablecomputerterminalfortheapplicanttotaketheexamandensuretheexamiscompletedaccordingtotheinstructionsprovided.

  2. Theexamandananswersheetwithinstructionswillbesenttotheproctor.Theapplicantandproctorwillarrangefortheexamtobecompletedaccordingtotheinstructionsprovided.

3.IndividualspassingoneoftheexamswillreceivetheappropriatecertificationbyASEM.

4.Individualsfailinganexammayretakeitoncewithin90days.After90days,an individualmustsubmitanewapplicationandpaytherequiredfee.Asecondfailurewillresultintheindividualhavingtowaitsixmonthstotaketheexamagainwitha newapplicationand fee.

*Proctorsarethird-­‐partyindividualswhoagreetoserveinthiscapacity.Theycanbeanindividual’ssupervisor,someonefromtheHRdepartment,oraneducationofficer.A librarianatapublicoruniversitylibraryoranauthorizedagentofauniversityorprivatetestingcentermayalsoserveintheeventsomeonewithintheapplicant’scompanycannot befound.ASEMCertifiedKnowledgeproviders(CKPs)mayalsobeauthorizedtogivetheexams.

Recertification

CAEMlevel

IndividualscertifiedattheCAEMlevelmayberecertifiedonetimeattheCAEMlevel.ThisoptionensuresthatallCAEMswouldbeabletogeneratesufficientexperiencetoqualifyfortheCPEMlevel.CPEMcertificationrequirementsaredescribedintheASEMdocument:EngineeringManagerCertificationRequirements.RecertificationattheCAEMlevelcanbeachievedbyaccumulating45PDUsovertheprecedingthreeyearsandbypayinga recertificationfeeof$100 membertoASEM.PDUsareself-­‐reportedtoASEMwiththeapplicationforrecertification.

CPEMlevel

IndividualscertifiedattheCPEMlevelmayberecertifiedbyaccumulating45PDUsovertheprecedingthreeyearsandbypayingarecertificationfeeof$150 non-member/$100 membertoASEM.PDUsareself-­‐reportedtoASEMwiththeapplicationforrecertification.

ProfessionalDevelopmentUnits

Everyyear,therearemanyopportunitiestoearnprofessionaldevelopmentunits(PDUs)towardsASEMrecertification.Forrecertification,individualsarerequiredtoself-­‐reportPDUsobtainedduringtheprecedingthreeyears.ItistheresponsibilityoftheindividualtomaintainrecordssupportingthePDUsreported,andthesemaybesubjecttoauditbyASEM.PDUsquantifyapprovedlearningandprofessionalserviceactivities.Whilecoursesandseminarsareidealwaystostayup-­‐to-­‐datewithengineeringmanagementbest practices,manyotheractivitiesoccurringindailyprofessionallifemaycounttowardPDUs.ThefollowingisalistofopportunitiestoearnPDUsthatarerecognizedbyASEM.Otheractivitiesnotlistedheremayqualify.IndividualsmaycontacttheASEMDirectorforProfessionalDevelopmentandContinuingEducationconcerningthevalidityofotheractivitiesnotlistedhere.

1.CertifiedEducationProvider(CKP)Courses:ThereareCertifiedKnowledgeProvidersofferingtrainingcoursesbasedonthecurrenteditionoftheGuidetotheEngineeringManagementBodyofKnowledge.IndividualsearnonePDUforeachhourofformaltraining.

2.ASEMAnnualConference:TheannualASEMconferenceoffersopportunitiestonetworkwithcolleaguesandattendpresentationsthatgotowardreceivingPDUs.IndividualsearnonePDUforeachhourofpresentationattendance.

3.ASEMStudentandCommunityOfferings:ASEMStudentChaptersholdevents, meetingandeducationalsessionsthatareapprovedforPDUs.IndividualsearnonePDUforeachhourofchapterorcommunityattendance.

4.ProfessionalActivities:AuthoringanarticleaboutengineeringmanagementorspeakingatanengineeringmanagementeventcanquicklyearnyouPDUs.ASEM offers10PDU’sforanapplicableconferencepaperorpresentationand20PDU’sforpublishedjournalarticle.

5.Self-­‐DirectedLearning:IndividualsobtainPDUsbysharingengineeringmanagementknowledgewithcolleagues.ASEMwillrecognizeactivitiesthatinvolvepersonallyconductedresearchorstudy.ThisincludesdiscussionsorcoachingsessionswithcolleaguesorclientsthatputtouseinformationalmaterialssuchasCD-­‐ROMs,articles,books,videosorinstructionalmanuals.IndividualsearnonePDUforeachhourofself-­‐directedlearning.

6.EducationalProgramsbyOutsideProviders:ASEMrecognizesrelevanteducational activitiesorprogramsofferedbyorganizationsnotassociateddirectlywithASEM.OnehouroflearningrelevanttoengineeringmanagementwithinastructuredactivityorcourseequalsonePDU.

7.VolunteerProfessionalService:IndividualsearnPDUsforprovidingservicestoaprofessionalorganizationorsocietyrelatedtothefieldofengineeringmanagement. Opportunitiesexisttoserveasanelectedofficer,conferenceofficial,orcommitteemember.Volunteerengineeringmanagementrelatedservicecanalsobeprovidedtoacommunityorcharitablegroup.Individualsearnupto5PDU’speryearforcharitablework.
