GuidanceforMScStudentsand SupervisorsSection 1– Introduction

Aim ofguidancefor MSc studentsandsupervisors: Theaim ofthisguideistoprovidestudents withdetail ofthestructureandrequirementsforthe writtendissertationrequiredforWL898. Detailsofthe ResponsibilitiesoftheStudentDissertationProject MScinPDCandThe MScinPDCGuidefor DissertationSupervisorscan befound at AnnexA and Brespectively.

Usein conjunctionwiththe ModuleGuide:Thisguidehasbeendesignedto beusedinconjunctionwith the ModuleGuideforWL898.

Aimofthedissertation:Thepurposeofthedissertationisforstudenttodemonstratethat theyhavecriticallyexamined,indepth,aresearchquestionrelevanttotheirprofessionalpractice and are aware of the strengths and weaknesses of the methods used and results obtained.Thisshouldbesupportedbyacriticalreviewoftheliterature,astatementofthemethods,ananalysisofthedataandanextendeddiscussionofthefindings.Furtherdetailscan befoundinSection5.

Useofsupervisors:Eachstudentwillbeallocatedadissertationsupervisor.Studentsshouldworkwiththeirallocatedsupervisorforthedurationofthemoduletoensurethattheirworkiscompletedto meetthe submissiondeadline.Studentsshoulddirecttheworkandinitiatetheir contactswiththeirsupervisor.

Eachstudentmayhaveupto10hourstutorialsupport,whichincludesanytimeusedforreadingorcommentingonmaterial,withtheirAcademicsupervisor,orothermemberoftheprogrammeteam;whichmaybeinperson,byemail,telephone,Skypeandsoon–tosuitindividualcircumstance.Monthlysummariesoftutorialsupportwillberecordedbythesupervisors,usingtheformatAnnexC,andacopywillbeforwardedelectronicallytothestudentfortheirownrecordandacopyforwardedtotheMScinPDCat placeintherelevantfileforqualityassurancearchivepurposes.

Typesof Supervisors

Studentsmaybeassignedtoonesupervisorwhowillactasbothalocalandacademicsupervisor.Insomecasesstudentsmaybeallocatedtotwosupervisorstoensuretherequirements oftheproposedresearchdissertation aremet.

AcademicSupervisors

TheroleoftheAcademicsupervisoristoguideandassiststudentsduringtheirproject,thisshouldinvolvenomorethan10hoursofsupervisionovertheyear,whichmaybe bytelephoneande-mail,plusattendanceatabriefingatthebeginningofthethirdyear,attendanceataworkshoptostandardisemarkingdissertations,andpossibly,ifrequired,attendanceatalocalethicscommitteehearing.AcademicSupervisorsareexpectedtomarkdissertationsfromstudentsother thantheonestheyaresupervising.

Local/AdministrativePractical/ClinicalSupervisors

Theroleofalocalandclinical supervisoristoguideandassiststudentsforwhom theyareclinically responsible in aTrust.Local supervisioninvolvesassistingstudentsingainingapproval for their projectfrom theTrust, ResearchandDevelopment Officeand/ or AuditorNHSEthicsCommittee,andensuringthat theyaregivenevery opportunityto collectdatafortheirproject. It doesnot involvesupervisingthewritingofthedissertation.

CombinedSupervisors

Somesupervisorscancovertherolesandresponsibilitiesofthelocalandacademicsupervisors.

Contactdirect:Thestudentsandsupervisorsshouldbeindirectcontact.Studentsshouldinitiatecontacts.

Negotiatetime:Supervisortutorialsshouldbenegotiatedtomeettherequirementsofthestudentandtheavailabilityofthesupervisor.Thetutorialsmaybefacetofaceor bytelephone orbyemail orbyotherelectroniccommunicationsuch asSkype.

Expectedresponsetime:Inroutineworkingtimestudentscanreasonablyexpectaresponsefromsupervisorswithin2workingdays.Ifsupervisorsorstudentshaveplannedabsencesorannual vacationthenstudentstheyshouldnotifyeachother inadvance.

Plagiarismandduplication:Plagiarismistheactofpresentingtheideasordiscoveriesofanotherasone'sown.Tocopysentences,phrasesorevenstrikingexpressionswithoutacknowledgementinamannerwhichmaydeceivethereaderastothesourceisplagiarism;toparaphraseinamannerwhichmaydeceivethereaderislikewiseplagiarism.Astudentmustnotreproducein any worksubmittedforassessment(forexample,examinationanswers,essays,projectreports,dissertationsortheses)anymaterialderivedfromworkauthoredbyanother withoutclearlyacknowledgingthe source.

LibrariesandAccessing Literature

AsTrustemployees(DCTsandSalariedDentists)orNHSContractors ( thoseworkinginpractices withcontractsforprovidingGeneral DentalServiceswithin theNHS),all NHSdentists haverightsofaccesstothe libraries intheirlocalhospital librariesandto helpfromthe librariansinlocatingandaccessingliteratureandalso to beingissuedwithAthenspasswords.

Those,who aremembersoftheBritishDental Association can alsoaccessliterature via theBDA'sInformationCentre(library)(Tel 02075634550).

StatisticalSupport

DrMikeNichollsoftheCentreforProfessional Practice(CPP)formerly ofthe University ofKenthasagreedtobe available to advise anystudentsonstatisticalqueries. His

R&D and EthicsApprovalApplications

Thelocalsupervisorisresponsiblefor checkingapplications to R&DOfficersandethicscommitteesandfor countersigningthem.If requested, thelocalsupervisorshouldaccompanya student to an NHSEthicsCommitteemeeting at which the relevantapplication is beingconsidered.Oncecountersignedbythesupervisor, beforetheyaresubmitted,NHSEthicsapproval applicationsshould be sent totheUniversity ofKent'sResearchEthicsandGovernanceOfficer - NicolePalmer ()whowillcheckthem,adviseifanyrevisionsarenecessaryandcountersignthemonbehalfofthesponsoringorganisation(theUniversity ofKent).After thistheyshouldthen be submittedtoIRAS.

Section 3- Schedulefor Completion

Thefollowing Schedulefor Completion isprovided as aguide tohowthe projectdissertationmightbeachieved in thetimescaleavailable.At eachof thedatesindicatedstudentsare askedtocontacttheirSupervisor to provide an update on theirprogress.

The oralpresentationisgiven inFebruaryandMarch2017. It is in theformofa20minute PowerPointplus five minutesfor questions.ThePowerPointshouldcoverthetitle of theMSc project, thebackgroundtotheproject, whichincludesthe relevantliteratureandtherelevancetothecandidate's practice,theaimsand astatementoftheproblem,themethodsused,theresultsand a discussionoftheresults.Thediscussion shouldhighlight anylimitations inthestudyandcomparethe resultswiththoseofpreviousstudies.

If datacollectionandanalysis for thestudyhas notbeencompletedbythe timetheoral presentation is given, then it is satisfactoryforthecandidate togive apresentationofinterimresultsandtoexplainthatthis is a limitation in thediscussion.Thosereportingtheresultsofsystematicreviews shoulduse thesameformat.

Ontheday,candidatesshouldprovidehandoutsoftheirpresentation.Theoralpresentations areassessedfor scientificcontentandthestyle,against ascoringgrid,a copyofwhichwill be given to candidatesin September2016,when theyare briefedonhowto give the presentationsanddesigntheir slides.

AnnexA

Postgraduatestudentsshouldparticipatefullyandtaketheinitiativeinplanningandexecutingtheirprojectstudyneedsandanynecessaryadditionaltraining,andwillsharewiththeirProjectSupervisorstheresponsibilitiesinvolvedinthemonitoringprogress.Allstudentsmustattendthetaught sessionforWL898.

Supervision

ProjectSupervisorsarenotminders;therelationshipwiththestudentisoneofadulttoadultnotparenttochild.AllstudentsareaskedtounderstandandtorespecttheProjectSupervisors’availability andtimeconstraints.

StudentsmustfamiliarisethemselveswithUniversity,FacultyandCentrerequirements,proceduresfordissertationprojectsandassociatestudybyreadingtheModuleGuidefor WL898 andUniversity academicguides anddocumentation.

Planning andProgress

Studentsareexpectedtoparticipateinplanning,progressing,andcompletingtheirstudies,includingpreparingforreviewsregardingconfirmationandmustparticipateasrequiredintheprocess ofmonitoringtheirprogress.

StudentsmayforwardquestionstotheProjectSupervisorandshouldexpectaresponsewithin 2workingdays, unlessduringaperiodofnotifiedabsence.

StudentmayrequesttheirAcademicProjectSupervisorstoreadwrittenwork.Onedraftpersectionoutlinedbelowisgenerallyreasonable:

TheseSectionsshouldbeforwardedbypriorarrangementtotheAcademicProjectSupervisor.Thisworkwillbereceived,readandconstructivecriticismprovidedwithinreasonabletime(5workingdaysunlessonperiodofpre-warnedabsence).Thisreadingtimewillcountagainst thetutorialtimeallocatefora student.

TheAcademicProjectSupervisorwillexpecttoseeatleastthefinaldraftofthestudentprojectononeoccasionandcomment,butthiswillnotbeafullproofreading,andspellingandgrammarwillremain theresponsibility ofthestudent.

MeetingAssessment Deadlines and Requirements

Studentsmustsubmitwrittenworkontimeandattendsupervisionsessionsasrequired by theCentre andUniversity.

Extensionsto Deadlines

Therewill be the requirementfor regular supervisionandallstudentshave been allocatedaProjectSupervisoror Supervisors.Studentsareexpected tonegotiateregularmeetings,which maybe viaSkypeor telephone,withtheirSupervisor(s).

General Role of Supervisors

ThegeneralroleofProjectSupervisorsistoguide and assiststudentsduringtheirproject.Asdetailed on page3 of thisguidancedocument, somestudentswillhave justonesupervisorwhowill be responsibleforallaspectsof their supervision(localandacademic). However,others willhavetwosupervisors,onelocalandoneacademic. TheLocalSupervisordealswithlocal aspectsoftheprojectbutnottheacademicsupervision oftheproductionofthedissertation. TheAcademicSupervisorisresponsiblefor overseeing thewritingofthedissertationandmaybeasked tomarkatleastonedissertationbutusually notthatof theirstudent(s).

ProjectSupervisorsarerequiredtoidentifyanypotentiallyfraudulentbehaviourand ensureproperresearchgovernanceproceduresarecompliedwith. Forexamplelookingthroughanytranscripts or statisticsandbeingreassuredthe analysisiscorrect.

TheProject Supervisor’srole isoneofanencourager, a listeningear, andtooffer suggestionsandguidance. Project Supervisorsshouldaim tomove the projectforwardbyasking questionsandenteringintodiscussion, rather thantelling thestudentswhat to do.ProjectSupervisorsarenot minders; therelationshipwith thestudent isone ofadulttoadult notparent tochild.Allstudentshave beenrequestedtorespect theProject Supervisor’stimeandother responsibilities. Ifpossiblesupervisorsshouldattendtheoral presentationoftheresultsoftheproject(s) theyare supervising.The oralpresentationsare given ineither February orMarchonthe dateslisted on page6 ofthisdocument.

Alongsidethisguidancearethe University regulationsfor dissertationsaswell as the ModuleGuideand astep bystepguide,whichhave been given tostudentsduring thetaught sessionofWL898.The ProjectSupervisorshould befullyconversantwith the ModuleGuideandProject Guide; copiesareavailable onMoodleWL898.The ResponsibilitiesoftheStudentarealsocontained inthe ModuleGuide.

Thestudenthasalsobeengiven a copy ofthesedetailsabout thesupervisionprocess.

Format forSupervisionSessions

There is nospecifiedformatfor thesemeetingsso, for example,whereface tofacemeetingsarenotpossible, there isan expectationthat,thesupervisionwill takeplace byamethodwhich is ascloseas possible to ameeting–Skypeand soon, inorder toretainsomequalitycontact time. Supervision bytelephoneoremailmaybe usedbut shouldnotbetheonlymethod ofsupervision. Itisimportant thatduring the supervisionmeetingsthestudent’sprogresstodate andthefuturedirectionof their researcharediscussed.

AcademicSupervisionProgressRecords

In order thatadequateauditofsupervision can becarriedout andsothatsupervisorsmayundertakecontinuousmonitoringoftheirstudentprogress,AcademicSupervisorsarerequiredto ensurethemaintenanceofa supervisor’sprogressrecord ofatleast6supervisionmeetings.Theserecordsshould becompleted, acopygiven tothe studentanda copyforwarded totheMScinPDCProgrammeCo-Ordinatorandplaced intherelevant file. Copies

ofthe supervisionprogressrecord(AnnexC) should beforwarded tothestudent andAcademicRegistrar withintwo workingdaysofthesupervisionbeingconducted.

Student Training Needs

TheAcademicSupervisorshoulddiscusswiththestudentwhatacademicskillstrainingthestudentrequiresinordertocompletetheresearchdissertationproject.Theyshouldagreewiththestudentanyadditionaltrainingwhichiscompatiblewiththestudentneedsandwhichisachievableinrelationtothestudent’sprofessionalandstudycommitmentswithinthelimitsoftheregisteredperiodofstudy,makingcleartothestudentresponsibilitiesregardingorganisingandattending thetraining.The AcademicSupervisorshould takereasonablestepstofacilitate thestudent trainingneeds which may involve otherservices. .

Appearanceat NHSEthicsCommittees

Ifthestudent'sprojectrequiresNHSethicsapproval, it istheresponsibilityof thelocalsupervisortocheckandsigntheapplicationforms,toensurethattheyarethensenttotheResearchEthicsandGovernanceOfficer,UniversityofKentforcheckingandforsignatureasthesponsoringorganisationandthentheirsubmissiontoIRAS/NRES.Ifrequestedbythestudent,localsupervisorsshouldaccompanythemtotheEthicsCommitteemeetingatwhichtheapplication is considered.

WrittenWork

TheAcademicSupervisorshouldexpectrequeststoreadwrittenwork.Onedraftpersectionoutlinedbelowisgenerallyreasonable:

  • IntroductionwiththeLiteratureReview,StatementoftheProblem–ResearchQuestionrelatedtothestudent’sprofessional practice andAims
  • ReviewofLiterature
  • MethodologyandMethods
  • ResultsandAnalysis
  • DiscussionandConclusionsandRecommendations

Draftworkshouldbereceived,readandconstructivecriticismprovidedwithinreasonabletime(5workingdaysunlessonperiodofpre-warnedabsence).Thiswillcountagainstthetutorialtimeallocateforastudent.

ItisexpectedthatwrittendraftswouldbesubmittedtotheProjectSupervisor,atanegotiatedinterval beforethetutorial,sothattherecan beconstructivediscussion at thetutorial.

TheProjectSupervisorshouldexpecttoseeatleastthefinaldraftononeoccasionandcomment,butthiswillnotbeafullproofreading,andspellingandgrammarwillremaintheresponsibilityofthestudent.

Marking and Calibration

Asmentionedpreviously,SomeAcademicsupervisorswillberequiredtomarkdissertationsbutnotofthestudentstheyaresupervising.Inordertotrytoensurethattheydosotoauniformstandard,supervisorswillberequiredtoattendahalfdaytrainingandcalibrationsession,overandabovethe 10hours ofsupervisiontime.

Submission of Dissertation

Oncetheacademicsupervisorhascheckedthefinalversionofthedissertation,itshouldbesubmittedtotheHealthEducationKentSurreyandSussexaccompaniedbytheforms(AnnexD andAnnexE).
