JOB DESCRIPTION

OVERALL PURPOSE OF THE JOB

  • To lead, support and develop all post holders within the facultyof Science.
  • To raise standards of student attainment and achievement across the faculty and to monitor and support student progress.
  • To be accountable for student progress and development within Science.
  • To maintain high standards of learning and teaching and develop and enhance the teaching practice of others.
  • To ensure the provision of an appropriately broad, balanced, relevant and differentiated curriculum for students studying in the faculty, in accordance with the aims and priorities of the school and the curricular policies determined by the Governing Body and Headteacher.
  • To actively support the development of numeracy across the curriculum.
  • To actively support the development of literacy across the curriculum.
  • To effectively manage and deploy teaching and support staff, and financial and physical resources within the faculty to support the designated curriculum.
  • To actively develop a cohesive team of staff within this faculty area, able to work constructively together to deliver an appropriate curriculum for all key stages.

Main Duties: Strategic Planning and operational

  • To lead the development of appropriate syllabuses, resources, schemes of work, marking and assessment policies, and teaching and learning strategies within the faculty.
  • To lead on the day-to-day leadership, management, control and operation of course provision within the faculty, including effective deployment of staff and physical resources.
  • To actively monitor and track student progress and devise strategies to address underachievement, setting students individual targets.
  • To work with colleagues to formulate aims, objectives and strategic plans for the faculty.
  • To develop a ‘Raising Achievement Plan’ (RAP) which incorporates key areas of the whole school RAP and which actively plans to further develop the faculty and sustain excellent outcomes.
  • To oversee and manage all staff to ensure the work of the faculty fully reflects the school's ethos and aims.
  • To foster and oversee the application of ICT in the faculty, including the development of resources, online assessment and use of data.
  • To implement all school policies, procedures and relevant practices within the curriculum area, in particular those relating to Health & Safety of staff, students and visitors.

Curriculum

  • To be accountable for the development and delivery of Science and the establishment of this area as a combined provision across key stages 3, 4 and 5.
  • To keep up to date with national developments in the curriculum area, and teaching practice and methodology.
  • To actively monitor and respond to curriculum developments and initiatives at national, regional and local level.
  • To liaise with the Examinations Officer to maintain accreditation with relevant examination and validating bodies.

Staff development, recruitment and deployment of staff

  • To ensure that staff development needs are identified and that appropriate programmes of support are designed to meet such needs.
  • To directly line manage post holder in the faculty supporting their development and holding colleagues to account.
  • To be responsible for the efficient and effective deployment of the faculty's staff.
  • To ensure that Teaching Assistants are able to support targeted students effectively within the faculty.
  • To undertake Performance Management review(s) and to act as Team Leader within the designated faculty.
  • To make / oversee arrangements for classes when teaching staff are absent, ensuring relevant work is provided for students by the relevant subject leaders, and liaising with the SLT member responsible for cover to secure appropriate staff for lessons.
  • To participate in all aspects of the interview process for faculty posts and to ensure effective induction of new staff in line with school procedures.
  • To promote team work and to motivate staff to ensure effective working relations.
  • To be responsible for the day-to-day management of staff within the faculty, following approved personnel procedures.

Quality Assurance

  • To implement school self-evaluation procedures and quality procedures and to ensure adherence to those within the faculty.
  • To establish and maintain the process of setting challenging targets for the faculty and to work towards their achievement.
  • To establish common standards of practice within the faculty and develop the effectiveness of teaching and learning styles in all subject areas within the faculty.
  • To contribute to school procedures for lesson observations.
  • To monitor and evaluate the curriculum area/faculty in line with agreed school procedures including evaluation against standards and performance criteria.
  • To implement modification and improvement where required.

Management Information

  • To ensure the maintenance of accurate and up-to-date information concerning the faculty and management information system.
  • To make use of analysis and evaluate performance data provided.
  • To identify and take appropriate action on issues arising from data, systems and reports, setting deadlines where necessary and reviewing progress on the action taken.
  • To produce reports within the quality assurance cycle for the faculty.
  • To produce reports on examination performance, including the use of value-added data.
  • In conjunction with the relevant member of the SLT, to manage the faculty's collection of data.
  • To provide the Governing Body with relevant information relating to the faculty's performance and development.

Communication

  • To ensure that all members of the faculty are familiar with its aims and objectives.
  • To ensure effective communication and consultation, as appropriate, with the parents of students.
  • To liaise with partner schools, further and higher education institutions, examination boards, awarding bodies and other relevant external organisations.
  • To represent the faculty's views and interests, as relevant.

Marketing & Liaison

  • To contribute to school collaboration and marketing activities including contributions to the schools website.
  • To lead the development of effective subject links with partner schools and the community, attending where necessary events at partner schools.
  • To lead the effective promotion of subjects at Open Days/Evenings and other events.
  • To actively promote and support primary partnerships.
  • To actively promote the development of effective subject links with external agencies.

Management of Resources

  • To manage the available resource of space, staff, money and equipment efficiently within the limits, guidelines and procedures laid down, including deploying the faculty budget, acting as a cost centre holder, requisitioning, organising and maintaining equipment and stock, and keeping appropriate records.
  • To work with the member of the senior leadership team responsible for timetabling to ensure that the faculty's teaching commitment is effectively and efficiently timetabled, and roomed within the constraints of the school accommodation.

Pastoral

  • To monitor and support the overall progress and development of students within the faculty.
  • To act as a Form Tutor and to carry out the duties associated with that role.
  • To ensure the Positive Behaviour Management system, including rewards and sanctions, is implemented consistently in the faculty so that effective learning can take place.

Teaching

  • To model exemplary practice as a classroom practitioner and to support colleagues to develop their own pedagogy.
  • To undertake an appropriate programme of teaching in accordance with the duties of a standard scale teacher, commensurate with the grade of this post.

Additional Duties

  • To be a physical presence around the teaching spaces within the Science Faculty ensuring behavior expectations are upheld and good practice is shared.
  • To play a full part in the life of the school community, to support the aims and ethos of the school, and to encourage and ensure staff and students follow this example.
  • To ensure the faculty contributes to the enrichment/ Out of Hours programme.
  • To attend all Parents' Meetings relevant to the teaching of the faculty.
  • To continue professional development.
  • To engage actively in the performance review process.
  • To undertake any other duties as specified by the STPCB not mentioned in the above.

PERSON SPECIFICATION

  1. Qualified teacher status.
  2. Experienced, authoritative, specialised subject knowledge reflected in a good degree and an appropriate teaching qualification.
  3. Significant experience in leading and managing a team of staff and/or subject area.
  4. An excellent classroom practitioner with a proven record of examination success and evidence of exceptional standards of pupil progress.
  5. Ability to inspire, motivate and mediate.
  6. Ability to plan and set expectations appropriately for a range of learning needs and styles.
  7. Ability to maintain and promote high expectations for students’ behaviour and to maintain a good standard of discipline.
  8. Ability to lead and motivate staff, developing individuals and creating a team ethos.
  9. Understanding of and ability to support faculty members in implementing effective assessment for learning, including appropriate target setting, recording and reporting.
  10. Managerial skills and ability to engage in whole school operations.
  11. Skills in liaising with parents and other outside agencies.
  12. Ability to manage her/his own performance and professional development as well as that of others.
  13. Ability to actively create development opportunities and if required confront poor performance.
  14. Willingness to contribute to the wider life of the school and experience of supporting and delivering extra-curricular activities.
  15. Awareness of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child and an understanding of how the Rights Respecting School initiative implements these principles.
  16. Awareness and an understanding of important recent educational initiatives and proposed reforms to secondary education.
