City implementing automated cameras to detect speeding, stop-sign running incidents; Warnings to be issued during first 31 days of operation

CENTER POINT, Alabama –(10/1/2016) – On October 1, Center Point will activate its automated photo enforcement program aimed at detecting and deterring dangerous driving behaviors throughout the city.

Photo radar cameras will monitor stop-sign running incidents at the following locations, each with a history of violations or crashes:

  • 25th Avenue NE and 23rd Avenue NE (southbound)
  • Reed Road and Polly Reed Road (eastbound)
  • Reed Road and Polly Reed Road (southbound)

Further, two specially equipped vans will be used to monitor speeding incidents at various locations city-wide, targeting high-risk and frequent pedestrian areas.

The cameras will only be triggered to capture and store data, including video and hi-resolution images, if a potential incident is detected. If an incident is detected, the data will be reviewed by a Center Point police officer, who will have sole discretion to determine whether a citation is warranted.

Drivers found in violation will receive a warning in the mail until November 1. Thereafter, drivers found to violate the law will be mailed a citation.

“This warning period gives drivers time to adjust to the program. Our goal is to reduce traffic crimes that lead to crashes, injuries and deaths, so we want everyone to be aware that the deterrent is in place and to modify their driving behaviors before they get a ticket,” said Public Safety Director Antonio Weatherly.

The fine for running a stop sign is $110. Fines for speeding over the posted limit are tiered as follows:

  • 5 – 10 MPH: $60
  • 11 – 15 MPH: $110
  • 16 – 20 MPH: $135
  • 20 or more MPH: $160

A $25 late fee will be added to the second notice.Administrative hearings for those contesting the fines carry a $30 fee. The adjudication process will be handled by the Director of Public Safety.

Drivers who receive warnings or citations can review images and video of their violations before deciding to pay or contest.

In the coming months, city officials plan to expand the photo enforcement program to monitor red-light running and speeding at high-risk intersections along Center Point Parkway.

Center Point is partnering with Redflex Traffic Systems, Inc., a North American leader in road safety technology, to operate the photo enforcement program.
