Critical Thinking Question – Could World War I have been avoided? If so, then how? If not, then why not?

Week 16 (12/10/14 or 12/11/14)

Spoiler alert: Imperialism is one of the four major causes of WWI. From what you have learned about imperialism, why does it help cause WWI? Could this cause of WWI have been avoided or was imperialism a necessary occurrence?

Week 17 (1/8/15 or 1/9/15)

We have now examined 3 additional causes of WWI in class (Nationalism, Alliances, Militarism). Were any of these causes avoidable by themselves? Why or why not, explain?

Week 18 (1/15/15 or 1/16/15)

Your previous 2 entries asked you to discuss all of the causes separately in a vacuum to see if any of them were avoidable. Now, however, respond to the same question with the knowledge that all 4 of these causes occurred at the same time. With all 4 causes playing a role together, was WWI avoidable? Why or why not? Use evidence.
