Safework practices aretaught in shop classesand are implicit inall the YouthExploreTrades Skills modules. Thegoalis toteach afoundationof safety

inschool, sosafetywill becomesecondnature on the worksite,whereverstudents may work.

This sectionprovides teacherswithactivities, handouts,andresources onavariety oftopics, including employeerights and responsibilities, safety

inthe workshopand general shop environments.Theyshouldbe used tosupplementexisting safety instruction intheclassroom to reinforcethat safeworkingpracticesapply everywhere.

•Safety Poster:Have studentsmakeasafety poster that describesa toolor safety situationinthe classroom(e.g., science lab,technologyeducation class, metalwork or woodworkclass). Theposter shouldcontainsafety protocols,safety steps to set a machine, labelsmachine parts, and be approvedbytheinstructor/teacherbeforethefinal draft isprinted orhanded in.

•Acting/video: students actout asafety scene or scenario. “Safetysupervisor” couldexplain safetyprotocols. They could present ittothe class as a dramaskit or as a video(once approvedby the teacher).

•DesignaSafety PowerPoint orPrezi. Dependingon the student this couldbepresented totheclass with theoption of peerfeedback, or just viewed by the teacher.

•Watch and review a safety video as a wholeclass. Discuss and answerquestions. Collectsheets attheend for formative assessment. (This couldbeany numberof videosto reviewbasedon the coursehours.)

•Flippedclassroom. Assignvideosto beviewed athomeand then review as aclass(15minutes). Students should bepreparedto answer safety questionsbasedon thevideo.

•RefuseUnsafeWork. WatchtheMatthewBowcottStory video, andthenhave studentswritea250-wordparagraph onwhyyou would wantto refuse unsafe work. Provideexamples and details onhow you wouldproceed in awork-related situation to dothis.

•Invite asafety supervisor to theclass todiscuss the importanceofsafety onthe worksite.
